Cody Smith is an American politician and businessman serving as a Missouri House of Representatives member from the 163rd district. Elected in November 2016,he assumed office in January 2017.
A native of Carthage,Missouri,Smith graduated from Carthage Senior High School. He studied business and commerce at Missouri Southern State University. [1]
Outside of politics,Smith works as a real estate agent and owns a sanitization company. He is a member of the National Association of Realtors.
Smith was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in November 2016 and assumed office in January 2017. He also serves as chair of the House Budget Committee and chair of the Missouri General Assembly Joint Committee on Legislative Research. [2] [3]
After Missouri voters voted in favor of Medicaid expansion in a referendum,Smith led efforts to prevent the Missouri legislature from following the voters' wishes. Smith said,"Medicaid expansion is wrong for Missouri." He argued that Medicaid expansion would be fiscally irresponsible for Missouri,even though the federal government covers 90% of the cost for those covered under the expansion. [4]
In 2023,Smith,as chair of the House Budget Committee,proposed to eliminate state funding for public libraries in retaliation to a lawsuit challenging legislation to censor library collections and services as unconstitutional. [5] Among the books that are being defended in the lawsuit to which Rep. Smith objects are classic novels,holocaust history books and human anatomy textbooks. [6] The Senate Appropriations Committee restored funding to libraries in the budget without public comment. [7]
Robert Lee Holden Jr. is an American politician who served as the 53rd governor of Missouri from 2001 to 2005. A member of the Democratic Party,he previously served as the Missouri state treasurer from 1993 to 2001 and represented the 136th district in the Missouri House of Representatives from 1983 to 1989. In 2014,a poll by the Pew Research Center found that 52% of Missouri adults said that abortion should be legal vs. 46% that believe it should be illegal in all or most cases. According to a 2014 Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) study,51% of white women in the state believed that abortion is legal in all or most cases.

2020 Missouri Amendment 2,also known as the Medicaid Expansion Initiative,was a ballot measure to amend the Constitution of Missouri to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. The initiative was on the August 4,2020,primary ballot and passed with 53.27% of the vote. Following previous successful Medicaid expansion initiatives in other states,Republican lawmakers in Nebraska and Utah added work requirements to their states' Medicaid expansions,which supporters aimed to prevent by proposing state constitutional amendments for future Medicaid expansion initiatives. Opponents sued to prevent the initiative from being voted on,but courts ruled in the measure's favor. The measure was supported most in urban areas and opposed in rural areas. After a delay due to a lack of funding from the Missouri General Assembly and resulting litigation,the initiative was implemented in October 2021,albeit slowly. Republican lawmakers attempted to roll back the program and add a work requirement through a state constitutional amendment,which failed after the United States Supreme Court effectively prevented the implementation of one.
