The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is a state-operated mass transit administration in Maryland, and is part of the Maryland Department of Transportation. It is better known as MTA Maryland to avoid confusion with other cities' transit agencies who share the initials MTA. The MTA operates a comprehensive transit system throughout the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. There are 80 bus lines serving Baltimore's public transportation needs, along with other services that include the Light Rail, Metro Subway, and MARC Train. With nearly half the population of Baltimore residents lacking access to a car, the MTA is an important part of the regional transit picture. The system has many connections to other transit agencies of Central Maryland, Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, and south-central Pennsylvania : WMATA, Charm City Circulator, Regional Transportation Agency of Central Maryland, Annapolis Transit, Rabbit Transit, Ride-On, and TransIT.
MARC Train Service, previously known as Maryland Rail Commuter, is a commuter rail system comprising three lines in the Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area. MARC is administered by the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA), a Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) agency, and is operated under contract by Bombardier Transportation Services USA Corporation (BTS) and Amtrak over tracks owned by CSX Transportation (CSXT) and Amtrak.
The Red Line is a rapid transit line of the Washington Metro system, consisting of 27 stations in Montgomery County, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., in the United States. It is a primary line through downtown Washington and the oldest, busiest, and currently the longest line in the system. It forms a long, narrow "U", capped by its terminal stations at Shady Grove and Glenmont.
Bethesda is a rapid transit station on the Red Line of the Washington Metro system in Bethesda, Maryland. It is one of the busiest suburban Metro stations, serving on average 9,142 passengers each weekday in 2017. The Purple Line, currently under construction, will terminate at Bethesda, providing rail service to other inner Maryland suburbs such as Silver Spring and College Park, each of which has additional north-south connections by Washington Metro, and New Carrollton, which has Amtrak and MARC connections to both Washington, D.C. and Baltimore.
Pimlico Race Course is a thoroughbred horse racetrack in Baltimore, Maryland, most famous for hosting the Preakness Stakes. Its name is derived from the 1660s when English settlers named the area where the facility currently stands in honor of Olde Ben Pimlico's Tavern in London. The racetrack is nicknamed "Old Hilltop" after a small rise in the infield that became a favorite gathering place for thoroughbred trainers and race enthusiasts. It is currently owned by the Stronach Group.
The Western Maryland Railway was an American Class I railroad (1852–1983) which operated in Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. It was primarily a coal hauling and freight railroad, with a small passenger train operation.
West Baltimore station is a regional rail station located in the western part of the City of Baltimore, Maryland along the Northeast Corridor. It is served by MARC Penn Line trains. The station is positioned on an elevated grade above and between the nearby parallel West Mulberry and West Franklin Streets at 400 North Smallwood Street. Three large surface lots are available for commuters. The station is not accessible, with two low-level side platforms next to the outer tracks, but MTA Maryland plans to later renovate the station with accessible platforms and entrances.
The Metro SubwayLink, known locally as the Metro Subway, The Subway, or the Baltimore Metro, is a rapid transit line serving the greater area of Baltimore, Maryland, in the United States, and is operated by the Maryland Transit Administration. Less than half of the line is underground, and most of the line outside the central city is elevated or at surface grade.
Light RailLink is a light rail system serving Baltimore, Maryland, United States, as well as its surrounding suburbs. It is operated by the Maryland Transit Administration. In downtown Baltimore, it uses city streets. Outside the central portions of the city, the line is built on private rights-of-way, mostly from the defunct Northern Central Railway, Baltimore and Annapolis Railroad and Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis Electric Railway.
Camden Station, now also referred to as Camden Street Station, Camden Yards, and formally as the Transportation Center at Camden Yards, is a train station at the intersection of South Howard and West Camden Streets in Baltimore, Maryland, and is adjacent to Oriole Park at Camden Yards. It is served by MARC commuter rail service and local Light Rail trains. Camden Street Station was originally built beginning in 1856, continuing until 1865, by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad as its main passenger terminal and early offices/ headquarters in Baltimore and is one of the longest continuously-operated terminals in the United States. Its upstairs offices were the workplace of famous Civil War era B&O President John Work Garrett (1820–1884). The station and its environs were also the site of several infamous civil strife actions of the 19th century with the Baltimore riot of 1861, on April 18–19, also known as the Pratt Street Riots and later labor strife in the Great Railroad Strike of 1877.
West Cold Spring station is a Metro SubwayLink station in Baltimore, Maryland. It is located at the intersection of Wabash Avenue and Cold Spring Lane in the Arlington neighborhood, adjacent to the Towanda-Grantley neighborhood. It is the sixth most northern and western station on the line, with approximately 300 parking spaces.
Wabash Avenue is a six-lane boulevard in northwest Baltimore, Maryland, that runs from Patterson Avenue to Hilton Street, mostly through the Arlington community, crossing over Northern Parkway and Cold Spring Lane along the way. The road starts near the Reisterstown Plaza Metro Subway Station and continues to just past the West Coldspring Metro Subway Station, where it narrows and becomes a one-way pair with Dorithan Road, which ends several blocks later at Hilton Street.
Edgecomb, also known as Parklane, is a neighborhood in the North District of Baltimore, located between the neighborhoods of Cylburn (north) and Greenspring (south). Its boundaries are marked by Dupont Avenue (north), Coldspring Lane (south), Pimlico Road (west) and Greenspring Avenue (east). Central Park Heights, is located on the opposite side of Pimlico Road in the Northwest District. The neighborhood of Coldspring is located to Edgecomb's east, across Greenspring Avenue.
Cylburn is a neighborhood in the North District of Baltimore, located between the neighborhoods of Levindale (north) and Edgecomb (south). Its boundaries are marked by Cylburn Avenue (north), Dupont Avenue (south), Pimlico Road (west) and Greenspring Avenue (east). Central Park Heights, is located on the opposite side of Pimlico Road in the Northwest area of Baltimore City. Cylburn Arboretum and the neighborhood of Cold Spring are located to Cylburn's east, across Greenspring Avenue. The heavily wooded property with its historic mansion and grounds, walking trails, famous collections and gardens overlook the Jones Falls Valley with the Jones Falls Expressway further to the east.
Greenspring is a neighborhood in the North District of Baltimore, located between the neighborhoods of Woodberry (east) and Central Park Heights (west). Its boundaries are marked by West Cold Spring Lane (north), Greenspring Avenue (east), and Springhill Avenue (south). The western edge of the neighborhood runs along Pimlico Road from West Cold Spring Lane to Park Heights Avenue, then along Park Heights Avenue to Springhill Avenue.
Callaway-Garrison is a neighborhood in the Northwest district of Baltimore, located between the neighborhoods of Dorchester (west) and Ashburton (east). Its boundaries are marked by West Cold Spring Lane (north), Liberty Heights Avenue (south), Callaway Avenue (east) and Garrison Boulevard (west).
Cold Spring Lane station is a light rail station on the Baltimore Light Rail system. The stop is located on Cold Spring Lane near the interchange with Interstate 83. The station has two side platforms serving two tracks.
Mount Holly is a neighborhood in the Southwest District of Baltimore, located between the neighborhoods of Fairmont (south), Walbrook (east) and Garwyn Oaks (north). Its boundaries are drawn by Denison Street (east), Clifton Avenue (southwest), Gwynns Falls Parkway (north), Windsor Mill Road (northwest), and West North Avenue (south). Gwynns Falls Leakin Park is located to the west of Mount Holly.
The West Baltimore Innovation Village District is a neighborhood district of Baltimore City that will specialize in attracting startup companies and other employers to West Baltimore. Following the Death of Freddie Gray and the subsequent 2015 Baltimore protests, government leaders decided to launch the innovation district as a way to attract redevelopment and revitalization to the areas hardest hit by the protests. The district includes the neighborhoods of Mondawmin, Coppin Heights, Penn-North, Reservoir Hill and Bolton Hill.
