Coleg Cambria in North East Wales is one of the UK's largest colleges, [1] with over 7000 full-time and 20,000 part-time students, and has international links covering four continents. Coleg Cambria was created following the merger of Deeside College and Yale College, Wrexham. Coleg Cambria began operating on 1 August 2013. [2] Coleg Cambria is a young adult community for people aged 16 years and older.

Contents

It serves three local authority areas with a total population of almost 400,000: more than 12% of the population of Wales. [3] The college works in partnership with over 1000 employers including Airbus, JCB, Kelloggs, Kronospan, Moneypenny, UPM Shotton Paper and Village Bakery. [3]

Coleg Cambria won the 2015 Global Enterprise Challenge. [4]

In November 2015, the college was inspected by Estyn and rated excellent in both current performance and prospects for improvement. [5]

Coleg Cambria has five campuses across North East Wales: Deeside, Yale (Grove Park and Bersham Road in Wrexham), Llysfasi and Northop.

Name

Coleg is the Welsh word for college and Cambria is the Latin name for Wales, derived from the Welsh name Cymru .

The 'spectrum design' was developed and chosen with support from students, staff, Governors and local businesses and is intended to signify the diversity and inclusivity of the college. The spectrum mark also forms an abstract letter C. [6]

Deeside is the name given to a predominantly industrial conurbation of towns and villages in Flintshire and Cheshire on the Wales–England border lying near the canalised stretch of the River Dee that flows from neighbouring Chester into the Dee Estuary. These include Connah's Quay, Shotton, Queensferry, Aston, Garden City, Sealand, Broughton, Bretton, Hawarden, Ewloe, Mancot, Pentre, Saltney and Sandycroft. The population is around 50,000, with a plurality (17,500) living in Connah's Quay.

Coleg Gorseinon College was a further education college situated to the west of Swansea, in the suburb of Upper Loughor in Gorseinon. It was frequently ranked as one of the best sixth-form colleges in Wales and the United Kingdom. Recently the college was rated as 'outstanding' by Her Majesty's Inspectorate for Education and Training. Gorseinon College merged with Swansea College on 20 August 2010 to create a single sixth form and further education college for the Swansea area called Gower College Swansea.

Ambition North Wales is a joint committee and decision-making body overseeing the North Wales Growth Deal, a regional economic growth deal covering the North Wales region. Focus Wales is an international multi-venue showcase music and arts festival held annually in Wrexham, Wales. It is Wales' biggest music industry event and was first held in 2011. The Grove Park School is a former school building in Wrexham, North Wales, which was home to a school between 1939 and 2003. The site has been derelict since 2003, and was proposed for demolition by Wrexham council, until the Welsh Government listed the building in 2016 following a campaign to preserve it. Various bids have been made to re-develop the site, including becoming part of Coleg Cambria, converted into a new primary school or a Welsh-medium secondary school, a medical training facility, and most recently part of a national gallery.
