Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Originally known as the Victorian Football League (VFL), it was founded in 1896 as a breakaway competition from the Victorian Football Association (VFA), with its inaugural season commencing the following year. The VFL, aiming to become a national competition, began expanding beyond Victoria to other Australian states in the 1980s, and changed its name to the AFL in 1990.

He was transferred to the Glenelg Football Club in the South Australian National Football League (SANFL) in 1973 where he went on to play 90 games and kick 93 goals. Coach John Halbert dropped him the morning of the GF into the reserves in favour of an untried shorter player, Tony McInnes, debuting into the 1st’s in the GF. The 1st’s lost and the Glenelg Reserves took the flag. A bitter-sweet end to Anderson’s career with the Bays. pla
