Collective Arts Brewing is a craft brewery in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, founded by Matt Johnston and Bob Russell. It is a grassroots craft brewery whose mandate is to combine "the craft of brewing with the inspired talents of emerging and seasoned artists, musicians, photographers & filmmakers". [1]

Beers

Beer brewing is headed by brewmaster Ryan Morrow, [2] producing 6 craft beers that are available year-round, in addition to multiple seasonal brews. They produce a variety of different brews, including the Ransack the Universe India Pale Ale, [3] World Beer Cup winning [4] Stranger than Fiction Porter, [5] and their Rhyme & Reason Extra Pale Ale. [6] The brewery also produces their "Collective Project" which features different seasonal beers created by the brewmasters and cider in two flavours. [7]

The company's Audio/Visual Lager publicizes independent musicians with special limited edition band-themed cans, rotating every few months to promote a new selection of four artists. [8]

Collective Arts products are available across Canada in a variety of retailers including the LCBO in Ontario. [9] Products also available in the Northeast USA states; Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Illinois . Collective Arts also ships beer to Italy, Spain, Sweden and to Melbourne, Australia. [10] [11]

Art Initiatives

Collective Arts Brewing invites artists and musicians to submit their work in bi-yearly Calls for Art. Since the first art and music call in May 2013 over 16,000 submissions have been received from artists and musicians representing over 40 countries. [12] Art and music is chosen by guest curators. [10] Each artist is paid to appear on the labels. Collective Arts does not own the art but is allowed to use it on cans and bottles for a limited period of time. To date, Collective Arts Brewing have produced and compensated over 650 artists and musicians for appearing on limited edition cans and bottle labels. [13]

The company also features all of the artists and musicians on their website, including "The Black Box Sessions" [14] in partnership with Indie88 Studios, showcasing Indie and Alternative artists. [15]

Brewery

In 2014, Collective Arts Brewing leased the former Lakeport Brewing facility from the Hamilton Port Authority. [16]

Collective Arts built a co operative brewery with Nickel Brook Brewing in 2014. [17] Collective Arts purchased Nickel Brooks shares in the brewery in August 2017. [18]

Gin

In 2019, Collective Arts Distilling launched a flagship Artisanal Dry Gin, and a seasonal Rhubarb and Hibiscus Gin. Both Artisanal, and Rhubarb and Hibiscus won silver medals at the 2019 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. [19]

Beer was introduced to Canada by European settlers in the seventeenth century. The first commercial brewery was La Brasseries du Roy started by New France Intendant Jean Talon, in Québec City in 1668. Many commercial brewers thrived until prohibition in Canada. The provincial and federal governments' attempt to eliminate "intoxicating" beverages led to the closing of nearly three quarters of breweries between 1878 and 1928. It was only in the second half of the twentieth century that a significant number of new breweries opened up. The Canadian beer industry now plays an important role in Canadian identity, although globalization of the brewing industry has seen the major players in Canada acquired by or merged with foreign companies, notably its three largest beer producers: Labatt, Molson and Sleeman. The Lakeport Brewing Company was a brewery located in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Although it started as a producer of premium beers, it later switched to cheap discount brands, using a strategy of selling its beer for "a buck a bottle". By 2006, it had become the largest discount brewer in Canada. In 2007, Lakeport was taken over by InBev's Canadian subsidiary, Labatt. Three years later, InBev closed the Hamilton brewing plant, and shifted production of Lakeport beers to the Labatt plant in London, Ontario.

Firestone Walker Brewing Company is a family-owned craft brewery with operations in Paso Robles, Buellton and Venice, California. The brewery was established in 1996 by brothers-in-law Adam Firestone and David Walker. The original brewery was located on a family vineyard in Los Olivos, California. Their first beer, Double Barrel Ale, was made in a patented variation of the Burton union system. The main brewing operations moved to Paso Robles in 2001. Firestone Walker is today known for bestselling beers such as 805 and Mind Haze. Firestone Walker celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2021 and is now California's second largest craft brewery.

Wellington Brewery is a brewery in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. It was established in 1985 and was one of the first North American breweries to revive the ancient technique of brewing cask-conditioned cask ale. Phil Gosling was the founder. By 2011, the volume of sales required the company to expand its brewing capacity. Two new 150HL tanks were installed. In January 2013, four more tanks were installed to keep up with demand for Wellington products. In 2015, the company's facility was expanded with a 12,000-square-foot addition, including a 40-hectolitre brew house and new packaging line. At that time, the company employed a staff of 45. The company also has a distribution warehouse in Toronto.

King Brewery was a brewery in Nobleton, Ontario, Canada which won a number of awards. It operated in a traditional German style, producing lagers. Owner and brewmaster Philip DiFonzo gained input from over 200 bars, pubs, taverns, and restaurants before launching in July 2002 with a single Czech-style Bohemian Pilsner. King Brewery's 20 hectolitre brewhouse with a steam-fired kettle was be one of very few authentic Decoction Brew houses in Canada. This popular method of brewing in Germany is rare in Canada as it takes longer and is a more expensive brewing process.

Evil Twin Brewing is a gypsy brewery originating in Denmark. Founded in 2010 by Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergsø. Evil Twin Brewing started as a gypsy brewery, in that the company does not operate an official brewery and, instead, collaborates with other brewers to produce their limited-edition and one-off beers as well as a series of seasonal and year-round beers available internationally. In January 2019 Evil Twin Brewing opened their first brick and mortar brewery in Ridgewood, Queens, New York City. A tap room opened at the same location on October 2, 2019.

Women have been active in brewing since ancient times. Though Western societies have viewed brewing as a male-dominated field for the last 150 years, traditionally, it was an activity engaged in by women. Ethnographic and archaeological studies have shown that brewing was an outcropping of gathering or baking traditions, which were predominantly women's roles throughout the world. From the earliest evidence of brewing in 7000 BCE, until the commercialization of brewing during industrialization, women were the primary brewers on all inhabited continents. In many cultures, the deities, goddesses and protectors of brewers were female entities who were associated with fertility.

Apiwe Nxusani-Mawela is a South African brewmaster. Nxusani-Mawela is the first person from South Africa to earn a National Diploma in clear fermented beverages. She is also the first black woman in South Africa to found a microbrewery. Her company, Brewsters Craft, introduces students to the science of beer making through training and provides professional breweries a service through beer quality testing. She helped organize International Women's Collaboration Brew Day (IWCBD) events in South Africa.

The Blackstone Brewing Company is a craft brewery in Nashville, Tennessee, United States. Founded by Kent Taylor and Stephanie Weins in 1994, it claims to be Nashville's oldest craft brewery. The original brewpub, called Blackstone Restaurant and Brewery, opened on New Year's Eve 1994 and operated until 2016. In 2011, the company built a production brewery nearby and opened a tap house for the public in 2016. Blackstone also brews traditional European lagers for the Nashville Brewing Company. Blackstone Brewing Company has received more awards than any other brewery in Nashville, winning multiple medals at the World Beer Cup and the Great American Beer Festival.
