The 1914 California gubernatorial election was held on November 3, 1914. Hiram Johnson was elected in 1910 as a member of the Republican Party. Dissatisfaction with the conservatism of the William Howard Taft administration led many Republicans to join former President Theodore Roosevelt's Progressive Party, with Johnson running as the vice-presidential nominee in the 1912 presidential election. Despite losing the election, and winning California by fewer than 200 votes, Johnson was supremely popular in California. He was re-elected in 1914 as governor on the Progressive Party ticket, nearly tripling his vote from 1910 as a Republican, and was elected and reelected as U.S. senator many times until his death in 1945.

Colusa Unified School District is located in Colusa, California. The district is formed by the following three schools: Burchfield Primary School, Egling Middle School, and Colusa High School; which currently have 34, 31 and 26 staff members, respectively. The Burchfield Primary School's mascot is the BraveHawks, the Egling Middle School's mascot is RiverHawks and Colusa High School's is the RedHawks. The mascots for the three schools were changed to a Non-Native American name through a voting process effective August 2011. In addition to these physical schools, the district also has a Colusa Alternative Home School which assists families with the desire to educate children at home.

Sycamore is a former settlement in Colusa County, California. It lies near the mouth of Sycamore Slough, at an elevation of 49 feet. Sycamore was a farming community in the late nineteenth century and once had a mill, church, school, and a nearby station on the Northern Electric railway branch to Colusa. The Sycamore post office operated from 1871 to 1960. Today nothing remains at the Sycamore townsite, which is located on California State Route 45 on the south side of its crossing of Sycamore Creek.

The Colusa High School and Grounds, at 745 10th St. in Colusa, California, was built during 1925 to 1926. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. It was built as a high school in 1926 and later served as a junior high school, until 1976. At the time of its National Register nomination it was most commonly known as the Old Colusa Junior High School.

George C. Sellon was the first state architect of California. He resigned as State Architect on May 1, 1909 after the legislature passed a resolution to prevent him from working on his own designs and from bringing in private commissions as State Architect. He went on to form a private architectural practice in Sacramento in 1909, which later became Lionakis.
