Commodore Downs was a 3/4 mile American horse racing track located in Fairview Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania.

The $4 million facility opened for its first season of racing in 1973 after a one-year delay due to financial problems. From the outset, the track had consistently low attendance and purses averaging less than $20,000, making it difficult to attract popular horses. Industrialist Franciszek Jarecki bought the track in January 1980 for $600,000 after serving on the board of directors for many years. [1] Hoping to bring in new management, Jarecki attempted to break the lease with Lakelands Racing Association, who previously operated the facility, but was forced to continue the lease due to an unfavorable court ruling.

Lakeland's efforts continued to fail, leading to the tracks' closing in 1983 with $1.8 million in debt. The track signed an agreement with the Washington Trotting Association to reopen as Lakeshore Meadows in 1984 with harness racing, [2] but closed again after only one year. A final attempt to save the track in 1986 under the name Erie Downs failed as well. [3] Those problems persisted and the track closed quietly in 1988. [4] Today the property is the site of an industrial park.

The Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad, also known as the "Little Giant", was formed on May 11, 1875. Company headquarters were located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The line connected Pittsburgh in the east with Youngstown, Ohio in the Haselton neighborhood in the west and Connellsville, Pennsylvania to the east. It did not reach Lake Erie until the formation of Conrail in 1976. The P&LE was known as the "Little Giant" since the tonnage that it moved was out of proportion to its route mileage. While it operated around one tenth of one percent of the nation's railroad miles, it hauled around one percent of its tonnage. This was largely because the P&LE served the steel mills of the greater Pittsburgh area, which consumed and shipped vast amounts of materials. It was a specialized railroad deriving much of its revenue from coal, coke, iron ore, limestone, and steel. The eventual closure of the steel mills led to the end of the P&LE as an independent line in 1992.

The final day of live racing at the track was June 30, 2019, with the facility hosting simulcast race wagering thereafter. The only remaining live horse racing in Massachusetts is at Plainridge Park Casino, which has harness racing.

The original track opened on April 28, 1966 at Carencro, Louisiana and remained there until 2005 when it moved to Opelousas, Louisiana.

Ocean Downs is a casino and harness racing track in Berlin, Maryland, near Ocean City. It is owned and operated by Churchill Downs Inc.
