Facts about the district
The Commonwealth District has consistently had the base of its schools from Stafford County, as well as the larger schools in Spotsylvania County. In past years, the geographic area of the district was based primarily in Prince William County until the creation of the Cardinal District. It also at times included schools as far north and west as Winchester and Warrenton, and as south and west to include Albemarle High School of Charlottesville who had been a member since 2001.
The Commonwealth District has been a consistent force in AAA Division 5 Football, sending four different teams to the state championship from 1999 to 2004 (Culpeper, Stafford, Massaponax and North Stafford). The district has also won two state championships in Field Hockey (Stafford, 2005; North Stafford 1988), three in Cross Country (Stafford, 1996, 2011; Mountain View 2009), four in Girls Gymnastics (North Stafford, 1988–1991), one in Softball (Stafford, 1982), three in Wrestling (Colonial Forge, 2007–2009), one in volleyball (Albemarle, 2008) one in boys indoor track (Albemarle, 2009), one in Outdoor Track and Field (Stafford, 1968), two in boys soccer (North Stafford, 2011; Albemarle, 2012) and three in cheerleading (North Stafford, 1999, 2001, 2004)
Spotsylvania County is a county in the U.S. state of Virginia. As of the 2019 estimate, the population was 136,215. Spotsylvania is a part of Northern Virginia and the Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area. Its county seat is Spotsylvania Courthouse.
Culpeper County is a county located in the central region of the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 46,689. Its county seat and only incorporated community is Culpeper.
Charlottesville, colloquially known as C'ville, is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is the county seat of Albemarle County, which surrounds the city, though the two are separate legal entities. It is named after the British Queen consort Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who as the wife of George III was Virginia's last Queen. In 2019, an estimated 47,266 people lived within the city limits. The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the City of Charlottesville with Albemarle County for statistical purposes, bringing its population to approximately 150,000. Charlottesville is the heart of the Charlottesville metropolitan area, which includes Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, and Nelson counties.
The Virginia High School League (VHSL) is the principal sanctioning organization for interscholastic athletic competition among public high schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The VHSL first sponsored debate and also continues to sponsor state championships in several academic activities.

The AAA Northern Region was one of the four AAA regions in the Virginia High School League. It was made up of four districts: the AAA Concorde District, the AAA Liberty District, the AAA National District, and the AAA Patriot District. Group AAA is the largest enrollment class for VHSL schools, and typically AAA is the most competitive level as well. In 2013, the three classification format was eliminated in favor of a six classification system. Accordingly, the Northern Region was eliminated, while the districts were retained for regular season competition.
The Battlefield District is a district of the Virginia High School League which consists of schools in Fredericksburg and the surrounding area. Most of the schools in the district are in Spotsylvania County, which is one of the fastest-growing counties in Virginia. The district is named for the Civil War battlefields around Fredericksburg.
Tallwood High School is a secondary school in southwest Virginia Beach, Virginia. It was built on the site of an old colonial plantation whose manor house was Tallwood, hence the name of the school. Tallwood was remodeled during 2004-2005.
Massaponax High School is a public school in Spotsylvania County, VA. It is part of Spotsylvania County Public Schools and is located on 8201 Jefferson Davis Highway. Massaponax High School opened in the fall of 1998 becoming the fourth high school in Spotsylvania County. Massaponax became one of the county's largest high schools and carries a current enrollment of 1,960 students in grades 9 through 12. The school complex consists of 106 acres (0.43 km2). Its outside amenities include a 5,001 seat lighted stadium, an 8 lane rubberized track, 2 baseball fields, 2 softball fields, 2 Multi-Purpose practice fields, 1 Soccer and Field Hockey field, 6 tennis courts, and a 3.1 mile cross country course. Inside there is a 1860 seat gymnasium, 1 auxiliary gym, 2 weight rooms and 1 athletic training room. A 1270 seat auditorium and Fine Arts wing serve both the community and school with community plays, musicals, and special events, as well as school, district and state events. Off site, the school uses a 25-yard (23 m), 8 lane indoor swimming pool. Massaponax has a daily working staff of 161. The school was run by principal Joseph Rodkey, who retired after the 2009-2010 school year. Dr. Joe Pisani was the principal from the 2010-2011 school year to the 2018-2019 school year when he was transferred to George Wythe High School in Richmond, Virginia. The new principal for the 2019-2020 school year is Dr. Joseph Gabalski.
Riverbend High School is a public secondary school located in Spotsylvania, Virginia, and is part of Spotsylvania County Public Schools. Opened in 2004, Riverbend is Spotsylvania County's newest high school. The school mascot is a bear and the school colors are royal blue and emerald green. The high school has an enrollment of around 2,000 students in grades 9-12.
