Communist Workers Party, a political party in the Indian state of West Bengal. CWP was formed by Jyotibhushan Bhattacharya, when the Workers Party of India split in 1976. [1] Bhattacharya was a professor of English at Calcutta University and in 1967 he had become the first non-Congress Education Minister of West Bengal. It used to publish the Bengali journal Gram-Nagar and an English monthly named Agenda. CWP changed its name to Workers Party in 1993. Professor Jyoti Bhattacharya died in the year 1998. He was well known as an eminent scholar and a Marxist theoretician.

Manabendra Nath Roy, born Manabendra Nath Bhattacharya, was an Indian revolutionary, radical activist and political theorist, as well as a noted philosopher in the 20th century. Roy was a founder of the Mexican Communist Party and the Communist Party of India. He was also a delegate to congresses of the Communist International and Russia's aide to China. Following the rise of Joseph Stalin, Roy left the mainline communist movement to pursue an independent radical politics. In 1940 Vinay Roy was instrumental in the formation of the Radical Democratic Party, an organisation in which he played a leading role for much of the decade of the 1940s.

Workers Party of India is a political party in the Indian state of West Bengal. WPI has its origin in the Democratic Vanguard in India. DV was formed in 1943 when a group led by Jiban Lal Chattopadhyay broke away from the Radical Democratic Party of Manabendra Nath Roy. DV were dissatisfied with the development of RDP into a non-Marxist outfit. Jiban Lal Chattopadhyay had been elected secretary of the Bengal Congress in 1930.

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee is an Indian politician and a former member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He was the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 2000 to 2011. He was the MLA of Jadavpur constituency for twenty-four years until 13 May 2011, when he was historically defeated by the former Chief Secretary of his own government, Manish Gupta, by 16,684 votes in the 2011 West Bengal election. He is the second West Bengal Chief Minister to lose an election from his own constituency, after Prafulla Chandra Sen in 1967.

He was chairman of the West Bengal Heritage Commission.

Bolshevik Party of India

The Bolshevik Party of India is an Indian political party in India. The party was founded in 1939. The party had a certain role in the trade union movement in West Bengal and was briefly represented in the state government in 1969. In later years the party has played a negligible role in Indian politics.

Ashok Bhattacharya is an Indian politician and the current mayor of Siliguri Municipal Corporation. He is a member of Communist Party of India (Marxist). He is a prominent leader of CPI(M) in the northern region of West Bengal. He was the Minister for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs in the Government of West Bengal for three consecutive terms (1996-2011).

Samik Bhattacharya is an Indian politician and member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is spokesperson of BJP's West Bengal state unit and a very well known face in Bengali media. Bhattacharya was a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from the Basirhat Dakshin constituency in North 24 Parganas district.

A. H. Besterwitch was an Indian politician and trade unionist. He belonged to the Revolutionary Socialist Party. As of the 1960s and 1970s, he served as general secretary of the Dooars Cha Bagan Workers’ Union, a trade union of tea plantation labourers in northern West Bengal. He was elected to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in the 1962, 1969, 1971, 1972 and 1977 elections. He led the RSP faction in the Legislative Assembly. Besterwitch died in 1979.
