James Conner Greene (born April 4,1995) is an American professional baseball pitcher who is a free agent. He has previously played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers. The Toronto Blue Jays drafted him in the seventh round of the 2013 MLB draft.
Greene attended Santa Monica High School,where he posted a 1.63 earned run average (ERA) and 76 strikeouts in his senior year, [1] and was drafted by the Blue Jays in the seventh round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft. [2] [3] He had committed to play baseball at the College of Southern Nevada,but chose to sign with the Blue Jays for $100,000 instead. [4]
He was assigned to the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League Blue Jays for the 2013 season and pitched to a 1–1 record,5.28 ERA,and 20 strikeouts in 30⅔innings. Greene split the 2014 season with the GCL Blue Jays and the Rookie Advanced Bluefield Blue Jays,posting a 3–4 record,3.03 ERA,and 51 strikeouts in 59⅓innings pitched.
Greene began the 2015 season with the Single-A Lansing Lugnuts,posting a 7–3 record,3.88 ERA,and 65 strikeouts in 67⅓innings before being promoted to High-A Dunedin Blue Jays. He debuted for Dunedin on July 4 and took the loss,allowing four runs on nine hits. [5] On August 6,Greene set a career-high in strikeouts,with 10,while pitching seven shutout innings for Dunedin. [6] He was then promoted to Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats and took the win in his debut on August 13,pitching six shutout innings against the Akron RubberDucks. [7] Greene made 26 starts in the 2015 season,posting a combined 12–7 record,3.54 ERA,and 115 strikeouts in 132⅓innings.
Greene was invited to Major League spring training on January 12,2016, [8] and reassigned to minor league camp on March 10. [9] Greene was assigned to the Dunedin Blue Jays to open the 2016 minor league season. [10] He was promoted to Double-A New Hampshire in early July,pitching his first career complete game and shutout on July 26,defeating the Harrisburg Senators 1–0. [11] Greene made 27 total starts in 2016,posting a 10–9 record,3.51 ERA,and 99 strikeouts in 146⅓innings. After the season,he was assigned to the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League where he made four starts,walking 11 batters in 10 total innings. [12]
Greene spent all of 2017 with New Hampshire,going 5–10 with a 5.29 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 132⅔innings. On November 20,2017,Greene was added to Toronto's 40-man roster. [13]
On January 19,2018,the Blue Jays traded Greene along with Dominic Leone to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for Randal Grichuk. [14] He began the season with the Double-A Springfield Cardinals and was promoted to Triple-A Memphis Redbirds in June. [15] In forty games (ten starts) between the two clubs,he pitched to a 4–5 record with a 4.09 ERA and 1.58 WHIP. [16] After the season,the Cardinals assigned him to the Surprise Saguaros of the Arizona Fall League. [17] On November 20,Greene was designated for assignment by the Cardinals. [18]
On November 26,2018,Greene was claimed off waivers by the Kansas City Royals. [19] Greene split the 2019 season between the Double-A Northwest Arkansas Naturals and the Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers,recording a cumulative 4–9 record and 5.13 ERA in 29 appearances. He was designated for assignment on November 20,2019. [20] Greene did not play in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. [21] He became a free agent on November 2,2020. [22]
On December 3,2020,Greene signed a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles organization. [23] Greene was assigned to the Triple-A Norfolk Tides to begin the 2021 season,posting a 1–3 record and 7.39 ERA in 9 appearances. On July 24,2021,Greene was selected to the 40-man roster and promoted to the major leagues for the first time. [24] Greene made his MLB debut on July 27,pitching two innings in relief against the Miami Marlins,giving up one run and striking out two. [25] On August 7,Greene was designated for assignment by the Orioles. [26]
Greene was claimed off waivers by the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 9,2021. [27] He pitched in two games for the Dodgers,allowing two hits and no runs in two innings before being designated for assignment on August 20. [28]
On August 23,2021,Greene was claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles. [29] Greene pitched in 24 games in 2021,posting a 7.11 ERA with 26 strikeouts. On March 14,2022,Greene re-signed with the Orioles on a minor league contract with a spring training invitation. [30] In 16 games for the Triple-A Norfolk Tides,he recorded a 10.61 ERA with 18 strikeouts across 18⅔innings pitched. The Orioles released Greene on June 20,2022. [31]
On July 2,2022,Greene signed with the Diablos Rojos del México of the Mexican League. In 12 appearances,he had a 2–0 record and 6.00 ERA with nine strikeouts in 12 innings. [32] In 2023,he made 30 appearances,compiling a 4–3 record and 5.65 ERA with 38 strikeouts over 51 innings. [33]
Greene joined the Cañeros de Los Mochis of the Mexican Pacific League for the 2022–23 winter season,appearing in 17 games with a 1–1 record,5.00 ERA,and 11 strikeouts over 18 innings. [34] He returned for the 2023–24 winter season,making three appearances and finishing with a 0–1 record and 6.52 ERA in 9.2 innings. [35]
In February 2024,Greene was announced as joining the Guerreros de Oaxaca of the Mexican League ahead of the 2024 season. He did not appear in any games before signing a minor league contract with the Houston Astros later that month. [36]
On February 23,2024,Greene signed a minor league contract with the Houston Astros. [37] In 34 appearances for the Triple-A Sugar Land Space Cowboys,he compiled a 6–3 record and 4.68 ERA with 59 strikeouts across 57⅔innings. Greene elected free agency on November 4,2024. [38]
In June 2025,Greene signed with the Wei Chuan Dragons of the Chinese Professional Baseball League. [39] He pitched primarily for the Dragons’farm club,logging a 3.18 ERA and 1.41 WHIP across 22⅔innings pitched before being released on August 17,2025. [40]
In late October 2025,Greene signed with the Adelaide Giants of the Australian Baseball League for the 2025–26 season as a starting pitcher at age 30. He made four starts,posting a 1–1 record with a 0.92 ERA across 19.2 innings,allowing 13 hits and two earned runs while striking out 23 batters. [41]
Greene is an avid surfer,and has also worked as a model. He is friends with actor Charlie Sheen,and made several minor appearances on the television series Anger Management . [42]
