Connoisseur Society is an American audiophile classical music and jazz record label. It was founded by E. Alan Silver and James Goodfriend. Silver and Goodfriend helped artists from the Eastern bloc to perform in the US during the Cold War, among them Ivan Moravec in 1962. [1]

The label released albums of Millette Alexander and Frank Daykin, known collectively as Alexander and Daykin, [2] Sergei Babayan, Antonio Barbosa, Samuel Bartos, Sara Davis Buechner (born David Buechner), [3] [4] Linda Bustani, George Darden, Kate Dillingham, Walter Hautzig, Morton Estrin, Madeleine Forte, Joyce Hatto, Michael Jamanis, [5] Trudy Kane, Ali Akbar Khan, [6] Ruth Laredo, Mirjana Lewis, João Carlos Martins, Blair McMillan, Ivan Moravec, [7] Garrick Ohlsson, Zaidee Parkinson, Manitas de Plata, Richard Reid, Cynthia Raim, Alberto Reyes, Elizabeth Rich, Edward Rosser, Mordecai Shehori, [8] Myron Silberstein, Patrick Stephens, Joe Utterback, Ilana Vered, Frances Veri, [5] David Allen Wehr, Wanda Wiłkomirska, and Oxana Yablonskaya.

The label became known for the premiere recording of Scriabin's complete 10 sonatas with Ruth Laredo in 1970 (CS 2032, CS 2034 and CS 2035).

Silver is also head of the company In Sync, [9] which offers remasterings on CD from cassettes and LPs.

Nelson José Pinto Freire was a Brazilian classical pianist. Regarded as one of the greatest pianists of his generation, he was noted for his "decorous piano playing" and "interpretive depth". His extensive discography for labels such as Sony Classical, Teldec, Philips, and Decca has garnered awards including the Gramophone Award and Diapason d'Or. Freire appeared as soloist with the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. He played and recorded piano duo music with Martha Argerich, a long-time musical and personal friend.

Ivan Moravec was a Czech concert pianist whose performing and recording career spanned nearly half a century. Media and critics worldwide often called Moravec "a poet of the piano" or "pianist supreme". He is considered one of the greatest interpreters of Chopin.

Michael Nathaniel Hersch is an American composer and pianist. He currently serves as faculty at the Johns Hopkins Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland, where he completed his own studies in music composition. The New York Times has commented that he writes "extraordinarily communicative music" and that "Mr. Hersch's music speaks for itself eloquently".

David Loeb is an American composer of contemporary classical music. Born in New York City, he has written extensively for early music instruments such as the viol, as well as instruments from China and Japan. He teaches at the Mannes College The New School for Music, and has additionally served as a member of the composition faculty at the Curtis Institute of Music.

Wanda Wiłkomirska was a Polish violinist and academic teacher. She was known for both the classical repertoire and for her interpretation of 20th-century music, having received two Polish State Awards for promoting Polish music to the world as well as other awards for her contribution to music. She gave world premiere performances of numerous contemporary works, including music by Tadeusz Baird and Krzysztof Penderecki. Wiłkomirska performed on a violin crafted by Pietro Guarneri in 1734 in Venice. She taught at the music academies of Mannheim and Sydney.

Antonio Pompa-Baldi is an Italian-American pianist. The first prize winner in the 1999 Cleveland International Piano Competition, Pompa-Baldi has been noted by The New York Times for his "meltingly beautiful" playing. He was also a prizewinner of the 1998 Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition and the 2001 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Pompa-Baldi continues to regularly perform internationally as a recitalist, as a chamber musician, and as a concerto soloist under such conductors as Hans Graf, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Theodore Kuchar and Krzysztof Urbański. Additionally, Pompa-Baldi currently serves as Distinguished Professor of Piano at the Cleveland Institute of Music and as honorary guest professor and visiting professor at three universities in China, including the China Conservatory of Music.

Elizabeth Sawyer Parisot is an American pianist. She has performed in solo and chamber music concerts worldwide at venues including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and Queen Elizabeth Hall. Parisot has collaborated with a number of prominent instrumentalists and vocalists, including Aldo Parisot, Yo-Yo Ma, János Starker, Ralph Kirshbaum, Carter Brey, Hu Nai-Yuan, William Preucil, and David Shifrin. Parisot is particularly well-known for her work with cellists, and in 2007 she was awarded the title “Grande Dame du Violoncelle” in 2007 by the Eva Janzer Memorial Cello Center at Indiana University.

Austrian pianist Artur Schnabel was the first pianist to record all of Ludwig van Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas. The recordings were made in Abbey Road Studios in London on a C. Bechstein grand piano from 1932 to 1935, seven years after electrical recording was invented. Originally recorded on 78 rpm phonograph records for the His Master's Voice (HMV) label, they have been reissued numerous times on LP and CD.
