Controlling the Famous was a Los Angeles, California-based indie rock band formed in 2001. After signing with The Militia Group, the band recorded the album Automatic City, which was released on May 16, 2006. The band split up in 2007.

History

The band was formed in 2001 by college students and neighbors Max Hellmann (guitar, vocals), Johnny Collins (guitar, vocals), and Brendan Hughes (bass guitar). After parting ways with their original drummer, Louis Laoudis, the band recruited drummer Mike Schneider in 2004. [1] Their first release was the EP Maybe It Won't Kill You, But Probably It Might in 2002. [1] A split EP with Operatic in 2003 was followed by another self-released EP, Two Birds vs. One Stone, in 2005. [1] The band then signed to The Militia Group in October 2005 and began working on their debut album, Automatic City, with producer Alex Newport. [1] [2] The album was released in May 2006. The album received generally positive reviews, with Allmusic writer Corey Apar giving it four stars, and calling it "a consistently enjoyable listen", [3] with Alternative Press writer Emily Zemler giving it the same score and describing it "as jagged and propulsive as any post-punk/hardcore album in recent memory". [2] PopMatters writer Evan Sawdey gave the album five out of ten, calling it "a mixture of highs and lows". [4]

In October 2006 the band went on hiatus, and after briefly working together in early 2007, announced that they had split up in February. [1]

Members of Controlling the Famous have moved onto new bands in the Los Angeles area. Drummer Mike Schneider now produces music as Barstool Astronaut, [5] and Max Hellmann played guitar in the bands Handshakes and Hotel for Strangers, with members of the defunct bands Wintergreen and Sputnik Monroe. Gosling was an American rock band formed in Tri-Cities, Washington. The band was composed of Davey Ingersoll, Mark Watrous, Shane Middleton (bass) and Isaac Carpenter. As Loudermilk, formed in 1995, the group released two albums; the independently released Man with Gun Kills Three! (1998) and then major label debut The Red Record (2002), and toured with Megadeth and Mötley Crüe. Loudermilk appeared in an episode of Dawson's Creek under the stylized name "LoudMilk" performing "Rock 'N' Roll & The Teenage Desperation" on stage. They also performed "Elekt" on the TV show Charmed.

Chris McCaughan is the guitarist and vocalist in the band The Lawrence Arms. McCaughan was formerly the guitarist for the bands Tricky Dick and The Broadways. His solo music is released under the name Sundowner.

Photographs is the debut release of Lakes, lead singer and guitarist Seth Roberts' newest ensemble after his first group Watashi Wa disbanded in 2004. Itas first performed at the Cornerstone festival in 2006, where L the bandlso sold a limited number of the EP. None More Black is a New Jersey-based punk rock outfit on Fat Wreck Chords, formed by lead singer/guitarist Jason Shevchuk after the demise of his previous band, Philadelphia's Kid Dynamite. Jason left Kid Dynamite so that he could finish film school, and "to sort some things out." While at school, Jason had written some songs and would play them with his roommate Dan Gross and a Drum Machine. By 2000, they had a second guitarist and a real drummer. That lineup soon fell apart, but by 2001 Jason and Dan had recruited Jason's brother Jeff, along with a new drummer. After recording a 7" for Sub Division Records, that lineup fell apart, this time leaving only Jeff and Jason. In 2002 a solid lineup was established, featuring Paul from Kill Your Idols on bass. A demo was recorded, circulated, and the band went on to release their first full length on Fat Wreck Chords.

Mark Watrous is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and graphic/video artist from Richland, Washington. He is best known as a former member of the band Gosling. Watrous is currently a member of Earl Burrows and the Shins and has routinely performed as a touring member of the Raconteurs, the Greenhornes, Shudder to Think, Brendan Benson, and Karen Elson among others.
