Copa de la Reina de Water polo is the second most important competition of female water polo played in Spain. Inaugural edition was played in 1997. The best eight teams in the first round of the regular season dispute the trophy on February in a final-eight format.

Xavier García Gadea is a Spanish-Croatian water polo player. He was a member of the Spain national team between 1999 and 2013, finishing in sixth place at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, fifth at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and sixth again at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. In 2003, García, then playing for CN Barcelona-Noferthe, ended up in fifth place with the national side at the 2003 World Aquatics Championships in his home town of Barcelona.

Water polo has been part of the Summer Olympics program since the second games, in 1900. A women's water polo tournament was introduced for the 2000 Summer Olympics. Hungary has been the most successful country in men's tournament, while the United States is the only team to win multiple times at the women's tournament since its introduction. The 1997 Men's European Water Polo Championship was the 23rd edition of the bi-annual event, organised by the Europe's governing body in aquatics, the Ligue Européenne de Natation. Afterwards he competed for his birth country in the 2016 Summer Olympics, as Brazil earned its first qualifying spot in 32 years as hosts. A total of eight men's and eight women's teams will compete in each tournament. This means a total of 192 athletes are scheduled to compete.
