The town of Guilderland is on the central-northwest border of the county. It is just west of Albany, the capital of the U.S. state of New York.

The word Greenbush is derived from the Dutch het groen bosch, referring to the pine woods that originally covered the land. The first settlement of the land now known as East Greenbush was made by tenants under patroon Kiliaen van Rensselaer circa 1630. The town was established in 1855 as Clinton, and was renamed in 1858. It is mostly suburban along its major highways and rural in the southwestern and northeastern corners.

New York State Route 385 (NY 385) is a state highway in Greene County, New York, in the United States. It runs from the village of Catskill to the village of Coxsackie, serving as an alternate route of U.S. Route 9W between the two locations. While US 9W follows a more inland routing, NY 385 runs along the Hudson River and serves the village of Athens. Modern NY 385 is the original routing of US 9W between Catskill and Coxsackie. NY 385 was originally assigned c. 1932 to what is now US 9W between Catskill and Coxsackie; however, the alignments of both routes were flipped by the following year.

Sleepy Hollow Lake is both a recreational lake and residential community in Greene County, New York, United States, located 120 miles north of New York City and 28 miles south of Albany in the Hudson River Valley. The lake is a two and one-half mile long, 324 acre, 70 foot deep man-made, Class “A” drinking water reservoir for the neighboring communities. It is surrounded by a 2,200 acre residential community, also known as “Sleepy Hollow Lake”, which is a Planned Unit Development (PUD) that self-governs residential land use, maintains common roads, parks, beaches, and other recreational facilities, operates most of the development’s sewer and water services, and provides community security and code enforcement. The community is within the viewshed of the Taconic Mountains to the east and the Catskill Mountains to the west. The community was featured in a 2015 episode of the HGTV series Lakefront Bargain Hunt.
