Craig Ellis is an Australian former rugby league footballer who played as a second-row or prop in the 1970s and 1980s. Ellis played for Newtown and Western Suburbs in the NSWRL competition.

Playing career

Ellis began his career with Newtown in 1978 making his debut in Round 18 against Cronulla which ended in a 44–0 defeat. Newtown went on to finish last that year winning only 2 games all season. In 1979, Newtown brought in Warren Ryan as the new coach of the club and he transformed the team from easy beats to a competitive side. In 1981, Newtown qualified for their first grand final in 26 years as they played against Parramatta. Ellis made 14 appearances that year including the grand final itself. Newtown went into the second half of the match holding a shock lead until Parramatta stormed home to win their first premiership 20–10.^[2]

Ellis played with Newtown for a further two seasons but missed out on playing in the club's final ever first grade game against Canberra. It was decided at the end of 1983 that Newtown along with Western Suburbs were to be expelled from the competition by the authority of the NSWRL board. In the coming months, Western Suburbs took the NSWRL to court and won their case to be reinstated. Newtown lacked the financial resources to challenge the decision and were omitted from the 1984 season.^[3]

In 1984, Ellis joined Western Suburbs as the club finished last on the table. In the four years Ellis spent at Western Suburbs the club finished second last twice and finished bottom of the table in 1987. Ellis final game in first grade was a 24–12 loss to Illawarra.^[4]

Campbelltown Stadium, formerly Orana Park and Campbelltown Sports Ground, is a multi-use stadium in Leumeah, New South Wales, Australia, owned by Campbelltown City Council. The Wentworthville Magpies, colloquially known as Wenty, are a rugby league team based in the suburb of Wentworthville in Sydney's Western Suburbs. Founded in 1963, the club has competed in various Sydney district competitions and, since 2003, the semi-professional Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield competitions in NSW, Australia. The club also fielded a team in the Canterbury Cup NSW as part of a joint-venture with the Parramatta Eels between 2008 and 2019 acting as Parramatta's feeder club.

The 1981 New South Wales Rugby Football League premiership was the 74th season of Sydney's professional rugby league football competition, Australia's first. Twelve clubs, including six of 1908's foundation teams and another six from around Sydney competed for the J J Giltinan Shield and WD & HO Wills Cup during the season, which culminated in a grand final between the Parramatta and Newtown clubs. NSWRFL clubs also competed in the 1981 Tooth Cup and players from NSWRFL clubs were selected to represent the New South Wales team.

The 1984 New South Wales Rugby League season was the 77th season of competition between the top professional rugby league football clubs within New South Wales. With the departure from the first grade competition of Sydney foundation club the Newtown Jets at the close of the previous season, 1984 saw thirteen teams compete for the J J Giltinan Shield and Winfield Cup during the season, which culminated in a grand final between the Canterbury-Bankstown and Parramatta clubs. NSWRL teams also competed for the 1984 National Panasonic Cup.

The Mount Pritchard Mounties Rugby League Football Club is an Australian rugby league football club based in Mount Pritchard, New South Wales formed in 1927. They currently play in the NSW Cup, Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield. Mounties are the current feeder club side for the NRL's Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.
