The Cranleigh Open [1] was a combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1923. [2] It was played in Cranleigh, Surrey, England through till 1981 when it was discontinued.

History

Cranleigh Tennis Club was founded in 1923, [3] and was formally incorporated in 1929. In 1923 the club inaugurated an open lawn tennis tournament played in Cranleigh, Surrey, England. [4] The tournament was continuously played annually with the exception of World War II when it was not staged from 1940 to 1945. After the second world war the tournament resumed through till 1981 when it was abolished.

The 1881 Men's tennis tour was composed of the sixth annual pre-open era tour now incorporated 65 tournaments staged in Australia, Canada, Great Britain and Ireland, and the United States. The 1881 Wimbledon Championships was won by William Renshaw. This year also saw the inaugural and important 1881 U.S. National Championships held at Newport Casino which Richard Sears won. This was also the year that the United States National Lawn Tennis Association, which is the world's first national tennis association, was founded. Renshaw then won two other big tournaments of the year, the Irish Lawn Tennis Championships and Princes Club Championships, whilst Richard Taswell Richardson won the prestigious Northern Championships.

The 1886 Men's tennis tour was composed of the eleventh annual pre-open era tour incorporating 100 tournaments. The tour began in March in Auckland, New Zealand and ended in December in Napier, New Zealand.

The tournament was held to at least 1885.

The Tally-Ho! Open Tennis Championships also known as the Tally-Ho! Hard Courts, was a combined men's and women's clay court tennis tournament originally founded in 1923. The tournament was held at the Tally Ho Lawn Tennis Club, Edgbaston, Birmingham, England until 1982.

The Wolverhampton Open was a combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1897 as the Wolverhampton Lawn Tennis Tournament. The tournament was organised by the Chapel Allerton Lawn Tennis & Squash Club, Chapel Allerton, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. The tournament ran as part of the worldwide circuit until 1981 when it was branded as the Mobil 1 Tournament for sponsorship reasons.

The Aldershot Division Open Lawn Tennis Tournament was a late Victorian era men's grass court founded in 1879. The tournament ran until 1885 before it was discontinued.

The Hull Open was annual men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded as the Hull Westbourne Avenue Open Tournament in 1884. From 1905 to 1914 the tournament was co-branded as the East Yorkshire Championships. The tournament was organised by the Hull Lawn Tennis Club, Kingston-Upon-Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The tournament ran until 1956.

The South Northumberland Open was a combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1885 as the South Northumberland C.C. Lawn Tennis Tournament. It was originally played at Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England until 1977 when it was of ILTF tour.

The Bridlington Lawn Tennis Tournament was an open outdoor grass court men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1881 as the Bridlington Quay Lawn Tennis Tournament at Bridlington, East Riding, Yorkshire, England. This open annual event was held until at least 1930.

The Droitwich Open also known as the Droitwich Spa Open was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1928 as the Droitwich Open Lawn Tennis Tournament or Droitwich Spa Open Open Lawn Tennis Tournament. The tournament was organised by the Droitwich Spa Lawn Tennis Club, and played at the Brine Baths Park, Droitwich Spa, Worcesteshire, England. The tournament ran until 1939 just before World War II then was discontinued.

The Angmering-on-Sea Open was a men's and women's international tennis tournament founded in 1920 at Angmering, West Sussex, England that ran until 1938.

The Somerset Championships was a men's and women's international grass court tennis tournament founded as the West Somerset Archery and Lawn Tennis Tournament in 1881 at Taunton, Somerset, England. In 1886 it was elevated to a county level event and renamed the Somersetshire Championships. the tournament ran annually until 1984.

The Burnham-on-Sea Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded as the Burnham-on-Sea Open in 1927 at the Avenue Tennis Club, Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, England. The tournament ran annually until 1980.
