Cristian-Sorin Dumitrescu (born 24 April 1955) is a Romanian politician.

Born in Bucharest, he graduated from the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies (ASE) in 1978. He was a factory economist from that time until 1983, a journalist from 1983 to 1990, and a diplomat from 1990 to 1992. [1] Elected to the Romanian Senate for Suceava County in 1992, he was initially a member of the National Salvation Front (FSN) and then subsequently switched to the Democratic Party (PD) in 1993. [2] He was re-elected in 1996. [3] In 2000, he was elected to the Romanian Chamber of Deputies, also for Suceava County, and defected to the Social Democratic Party (PSD) in 2001. [4]

He was again elected a deputy in 2004 and in 2008, this time for Vrancea County. [5] [6] During 2007, following the accession of Romania to the European Union, he was a Member of the European Parliament. [7] He returned to the Senate in 2012, for the same county. [8] In March 2014, following the resignation of Crin Antonescu, he was briefly acting Senate President. [9]

The Social Democratic Party is the major social democratic political party in Romania founded by Ion Iliescu, Romania's first democratically elected president at the 1990 Romanian general election. 2008 Romanian legislative election

Legislative elections were held in Romania on 30 November 2008. The Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) won most seats in both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, although the alliance headed by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) won a fractionally higher vote share. The two parties subsequently formed a governing coalition with Emil Boc of the PDL as Prime Minister.

Alexandru Athanasiu is a Romanian politician and jurist. A former leader of the Romanian Social Democratic Party (PSDR), he is a member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) since 2001. Athanasiu served as Prime Minister on an interim basis from 13 December to 22 December 1999, heading the Romanian Democratic Convention (CDR) cabinet after the resignation of Radu Vasile. On 1 January 2007, with the accession of Romania to the European Union, Athanasiu became a Member of the European Parliament for the PSD.

He returned to the Chamber in 2010, representing Bucharest, and started a new term in 2012, sitting for Ilfov County.
