Crossed beak

Crossed beak, also known as cross beak and scissor beak, is a congenital deformity in birds, particularly poultry, where the upper and lower parts of the beak do not align properly. This condition results in the beak crossing or growing in a way that prevents the bird from closing its beak properly. As a result, affected birds may have difficulty eating and performing other essential activities.

Identification

Crossed beak is a deformity characterized by a misalignment of the upper and lower beak, with one or both beaks exhibiting lateral deviation from the head's longitudinal axis. [1]

The upper beak frequently exhibits horizontal bending at its base, alongside the affected mandible, and the skull, particularly the nasals and orbits, shows asymmetry. [1]

Causes

Several factors, including incubation temperatures and variations, hereditary elements, developmental mishaps, bone morphogenetic protein 4, and management practices, have been identified as potential associations with or causes of crossed beak.

In a 1966 study focused on non-hereditary factors associated with crossed beak, it was identified that fluctuations in incubator temperature, stemming from electrical disruptions, emerged as a primary cause. [2]

Recent studies have identified potential candidate genes for beak deformity in domestic chickens, with several belonging to the keratin family. In a breeding trial involving Appenzeller Barthuhn chickens, believed to have a high genetic predisposition for crossed beak, mating affected parent stock led to a notably higher proportion of offspring with deformed beaks compared to mating unaffected parents. Specifically, mating affected parents resulted in 13 (15.7%) offspring with crossed beak and 67 (80.7%) with normal beaks. Conversely, mating unaffected parents yielded 3 (2.9%) offspring with crossed beak and 95 (93.1%) with normal beaks. These findings suggest a potential hereditary link to beak deformations although the genetic basis of this condition remains unclear. [3] A 2019 study on Huiyang bearded chickens revealed a correlation between the levels of bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) expression in craniofacial bones and the presence of crossed beak deformities. BMP4 expression was highest in severe cases of crossed beak. [4]

Association with unilateral microphthalmia and anophthalmia

In 1949, Frederick Bruce Hutt documented non-hereditary beak deformities linked to unilateral microphthalmia or anophthalmia in chick embryos. He observed that most crossed beak cases stemming from these conditions often go unnoticed, as affected chicks typically don't survive the later stages of incubation. Hutt suggested that the abnormality likely arises due to developmental accidents, possibly influenced by unfavorable environmental factors. [5] A 1961 study involving 12 hens and 5 cocks with unilateral microphthalmia or anophthalmia was conducted to investigate the heredity of the associated cross beak deformity. All the offspring produced in the experiment exhibited normal beaks, leading to the conclusion that this specific type of cross beak is not inherited. [6]

Prevalence

Crossed beak has been reported in at least 12 chicken strains worldwide, including commercial strains like leghorn (Landauer, 1938) and Rhode Island Red (Landauer, 1956), as well as native breeds like the Appenzeller Barthuhn, Schweizer (Joller et al., 2018), Chinese silk chicken (Bai et al., 2014, 2016), Beijing-You (Bai et al., 2018a), and Huiyang bearded chicken (Hong et al., 2019), with frequencies ranged from 0.2 to 7.4%. The deformity is present in around 30% of 114 Chinese native chicken strains. [1]

In a 2019 study conducted by Aidin Azizpour on congenital anomalies, 1,796,863 broiler chicks were evaluated. Of these, 56,031 chicks exhibited congenital anomalies, with crossed beak detected in approximately 27.43% of those affected. [7]

The occurrence of crossed beak appears to show no distinction between male and female offspring. [1]

Impacts

Crossed beak in birds lead to decreased feed consumption, hindered growth, subpar production performance, and reduced survival rates. The abnormality poses both economic and animal welfare challenges within the poultry sector. [1]

Hens are also exceptionally broody, and care for young well. Although they are fair layers themselves, laying only about three eggs a week, they are commonly used to hatch eggs from other breeds and bird species due to their broody nature. Silkie chickens have been bred to have a wide variety of colors which include but are not limited to: Black, Blue, Buff, Partridge, Splash, White, Lavender, Paint and Porcelain.

The Rhode Island Red is an American breed of domestic chicken. It is the state bird of Rhode Island. It was a dual-purpose breed, raised both for meat and for eggs; modern strains have been bred for their egg-laying abilities. The traditional non-industrial strains of the Rhode Island Red are listed as "watch" by The Livestock Conservancy. It is a separate breed to the Rhode Island White.

Infectious bursal disease (IBD), also known as Gumboro disease, infectious bursitis, and infectious avian nephrosis, is a highly contagious disease of young chickens and turkeys caused by infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV), characterized by immunosuppression and mortality generally at 3 to 6 weeks of age. The disease was first discovered in Gumboro, Delaware in 1962. It is economically important to the poultry industry worldwide due to increased susceptibility to other diseases and negative interference with effective vaccination. In recent years, very virulent strains of IBDV (vvIBDV), causing severe mortality in chicken, have emerged in Europe, Latin America, South-East Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Infection is via the oro-fecal route, with affected birds excreting high levels of the virus for approximately 2 weeks after infection. The disease is easily spread from infected chickens to healthy chickens through food, water, and physical contact.

Marek's disease is a highly contagious viral neoplastic disease in chickens. It is named after József Marek, a Hungarian veterinarian who described it in 1907. Marek's disease is caused by an alphaherpesvirus known as "Marek's disease virus" (MDV) or Gallid alphaherpesvirus 2 (GaHV-2). The disease is characterized by the presence of T cell lymphoma as well as infiltration of nerves and organs by lymphocytes. Viruses related to MDV appear to be benign and can be used as vaccine strains to prevent Marek's disease. For example, the related herpesvirus found in turkeys (HVT), causes no apparent disease in the birds, and continues to be used as a vaccine strain for prevention of Marek's disease.

Feather pecking occurs when one bird repeatedly pecks at the feathers of another. The levels of severity may be recognized as mild and severe. Gentle feather pecking is considered to be a normal investigatory behaviour where the feathers of the recipient are hardly disturbed and therefore does not represent a problem. In severe feather pecking, however, the feathers of the recipient are grasped, pulled at and sometimes removed. This is painful for the receiving bird and can lead to trauma of the skin or bleeding, which in turn can lead to cannibalism and death.

Abnormal behavior of birds in captivity has been found to occur among both domesticated and wild birds. Abnormal behavior can be defined in several ways. Statistically, 'abnormal' is when the occurrence, frequency or intensity of a behaviour varies statistically significantly, either more or less, from the normal value. This means that theoretically, almost any behaviour could become 'abnormal' in an individual. Less formally, 'abnormal' includes any activity judged to be outside the normal behaviour pattern for captive birds of that particular class or age. For example, running rather than flying may be a normal behaviour and regularly observed in one species, however, in another species it might be normal but becomes 'abnormal' if it reaches a high frequency, or in another species it is rarely observed and any incidence is considered 'abnormal'. This article does not include 'one-off' behaviours performed by individual birds that might be considered abnormal for that individual, unless these are performed repeatedly by other individuals in the species and are recognised as part of the ethogram of that species.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Cannibalism in poultry</span>

Cannibalism in poultry is the act of one individual of a poultry species consuming all or part of another individual of the same species as food. It commonly occurs in flocks of domestic hens reared for egg production, although it can also occur in domestic turkeys, pheasants and other poultry species. Poultry create a social order of dominance known as pecking order. When pressure occurs within the flock, pecking can increase in aggression and escalate to cannibalism. Cannibalism can occur as a consequence of feather pecking which has caused denuded areas and bleeding on a bird's skin. Cannibalism can cause large mortality rates within the flock and large decreases in production due to the stress it causes. Vent pecking, sometimes called 'cloacal cannibalism', is considered to be a separate form of cannibalistic pecking as this occurs in well-feathered birds and only the cloaca is targeted. There are several causes that can lead to cannibalism such as: light and overheating, crowd size, nutrition, injury/death, genetics and learned behaviour. Research has been conducted to attempt to understand why poultry engage in this behaviour, as it is not totally understood. There are known methods of control to reduce cannibalism such as crowd size control, beak trimming, light manipulation, perches, selective genetics and eyewear.

Broodiness is usually associated with female birds, although males of some bird species become broody and some non-avian animals also show broodiness.
