Crystal Kewe is a web and app developer based in Papua New Guinea and the CEO and CTO of Crysan Technology Ltd.

Early life and education

Kewe's interest in programming started with an interest in video gaming, and around age 12, she started teaching herself to program software writing in python. [1] [2] She attended Paradise High School in Papua New Guinea up until grade 10, in 2014, [3] after which she stopped going to school and continued pursuing a self-created education in programming. [1]

Kewe intends on seeking a college degree in New Zealand in 2022. [2]

Advocacy

Kewe has been a guest lecturer at the University of Papua New Guinea, and she currently serves as on the academic advisory board for Papua New Guinea's International Training Institute. She says that the supportive infrastructure is the most important part of successful educational systems, and that institutions do not fairly support different groups of people, highlighting girls as a marginalized group in scientific and technical education. [2]

Career

In 2014, Kewe and her father co-founded the technology company Crysan when she was 15, making her one of the world's youngest CEO's of a software development company. [4] The company has since expanded to include a team of over 20 employees, some of whom are based in Southeast Asia, Europe, and South America, [5] and has partnered with the Papua New Guinea government on education initiatives as well as building a platform designed to provide transparency surrounding public development funding. [1]

Apec App Challenge

Kewe and her father won first prize in the 24-hour hackathon which is a partnership between Apec, The Asia Foundation, and Google. The challenge was to “build an app that would help bilum artisans and entrepreneurs in Papua New Guinea," [6] as bilum makers often face difficult hurdles selling their crafts. [7] The team won for the conception and development of an app called Biluminous which is an e-commerce platform that features bilum makers and highlights their process while connecting them directly with customers, [8] and is one of the first mobile payment providers in Papua New Guinea. [9]

Bosa Togs is a senior IT manager from Papua New Guinea. In 2016 she won the overall Westpac Outstanding Woman Award and the PricewaterhouseCoopers Private Sector Award.

Esther Roibete Apuahe is a neurosurgeon from Morobe, Papua New Guinea, and the first female surgeon in the country. She was born in 1978 in Rabaul and has four sisters. Her father was a school teacher and instilled in Apuahe the importance of education. She is married and has three children. Esther Apuahe has contributed greatly to the field of neurosurgery, especially in the Africa-Asia region.

Joyce Kiage is a businesswoman from Papua New Guinea. In 2015 she won the Westpac Outstanding Women Entrepreneur Award. The Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation organization also recognized her as the First PGN Iconic Women winner in 2015.

The Westpac Outstanding Women Award recognizes exceptional professional work of women in Papua New Guinea. Since its inception in 2006, when it was called the Westpac Women in Business Award, the Award has recognized the achievements of individual women in multiple categories. Each category awardee then becomes a finalist for the overall WOW Award. In the face of acknowledged gender inequity in the country, the WOW Awards call attention to the crucial and highly skilled work done by women across a number of sectors. The winner of the WOW Award receives a grant to pursue a formal education, professional mentoring, opportunities for professional learning and networking at an Australian Executive Women's Leadership symposium, and a cash prize. The WOW Awards support the belief that investment in women leads to stronger economic outcomes for a nation as a whole, and strives to provide role models for the girls and women of the country.

Cybele Druma is a rugby player and women's sports activist in Papua New Guinea. She is responsible for introducing women's rugby to the country, fighting deep societal resistance to women in sports. Druma was head of the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football Union, the national rugby organization; she is one of the only females in the world to have presided over a national rugby federation. She is also president of the new Papua New Guinea Women Rugby Union Board a role to which she was elected for consecutive terms in 2007 and 2009. Now, Druma the president of Port Moresby's National Capital District Rugby Union. She has been recognized internationally for her work, and is involved in promoting women's opportunities in rugby worldwide.

Sarah Haoda Todd is an entrepreneur, fashion designer and activist from Lae, Papua New Guinea. After starting a cleaning business in 1997, Haoda Todd became a fashion designer, basing her designs on the art, culture, materials, and symbols of Morobe Province and Papua New Guinea. She is also one of the founders of Arise Women, an organization that fights against violence affecting women and children.

Samantha Maria Andreas is an environmental chemist and occupational health and safety expert in the mining industry of Papua New Guinea. She was the inaugural Young Achiever awardee from the first year of the Westpac Women in Business Awards, and is also a recipient of the Chevening Scholarships to study in the United Kingdom.

Dr. Rona Nibeta Nadile worked for the Department of Labour and Industrial Relations (DLIR) of Papua New Guinea (PNG), with a focus on legal frameworks for managing foreign workers. In 2009 the Westpac Women in Business Awards recognized her contributions with the Cardno Acil Public Sector Award. A few years later, she was dismissed after twice exposing political corruption within the national government.

Tessie Soi is known throughout Papua New Guinea (PNG) as the founder of Friends Foundation. This organization supports people who have HIV/AIDS. She later became involved in supporting victims of family and sexual violence.

Ruth Kissam is a community organizer and a human rights activist who has focused on Sorcery Accusation Related Violence (SRV) in Papua New Guinea. She was awarded the Westpac Outstanding Woman (WOW) Award in Papua New Guinea in 2018.

In 2019, at the age of 24, Raylance Mesa was the youngest winner of the Westpac Outstanding Woman Award (WOW) in Papua New Guinea (PNG) for her work to help her island to adapt to climate change.

Betty Higgins is an entrepreneur from Papua New Guinea (PNG) who developed and runs a trout farm and hotel in the Mount Wilhelm area. In 2009 she was awarded the overall Women in Business Award at the Westpac Outstanding Women Awards for PNG.

Avia Koisen is a lawyer from Papua New Guinea (PNG) who runs her own law firm. She was a founder member of Papua New Guinea Women in Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PNGWCCI) and has been its president. She is a campaigner against gender-based violence in the country.
