Crystalyne Curley is an American politician serving as the 11th speaker of the Navajo Nation Council since 2023. She is the first woman to hold the position. Curley was Miss Navajo from 2011 to 2012.
Curley is from Fish Point,Arizona. [1] She is Tsénjíkiníand born for Tó’aheedlíinii. [1] Her maternal grandfather is Kinyaa’áanii,and her paternal grandfather is DziłT’aadi Kinyaa’áanii. [1] Curley graduated with two bachelor's degrees from the Arizona State University. [1] She earned a master's in health administration from the University of New Mexico. [1]
Curley was Miss Navajo from 2011 to 2012. [2] She ran for the Navajo Nation Council Delegate position in 2022. Crystalyne Curley is currently working in the Navajo Nation Speaker's Office. [2] She later served as the senior public information officer for Navajo Nation President,Jonathan Nez. [2]
On November 8,2022,Curley was elected delegate after defeating incumbent Kee Allen Begay. [2] She is the first woman to represent the Tselani/Cottonwood,Nazlini,Blue Gap/Tachee,Low Mountain,and Many Farms communities on the Navajo Nation Council. [2] In January 2023,the council elected Curley as its speaker,making her the first woman to hold the position and the first fluent Navajo speaker in the role since Johnny Naize's resignation in 2014. Jane Dee Hull was an American politician and educator who was the 20th governor of Arizona from 1997 to 2003. She ascended to the office following the resignation of Fife Symington;Hull was elected in her own right in 1998 and served one term. She was the first woman formally elected as Governor of Arizona,and the second woman to serve in the office after Rose Mofford. She was a member of the Republican Party.
Annie Dodge Wauneka was an influential member of the Navajo Nation as member of the Navajo Nation Council. As a member and three term head of the council's Health and Welfare Committee,she worked to improve the health and education of the Navajo. Wauneka is widely known for her countless efforts to improve health on the Navajo Nation,focusing mostly on the eradication of tuberculosis within her nation. She also authored a dictionary,in which translated English medical terms into the Navajo language. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963 by Lyndon B. Johnson as well as the Indian Council Fire Achievement Award and the Navajo Medal of Honor. She also received an honorary doctorate in Humanities from the University of New Mexico. In 2000,Wauneka was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame.
