Culrav is the annual cultural festival of Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, Prayagraj. [1] [2]

Contents

Initiated in 1986, Culrav is a college-based festival in Northern India. It includes competitions, pro-nites and informal events by which Culrav attracts visitors from colleges all over the country. The festival draws students from colleges such as IIT Kanpur, IIT Roorkee, IIT-BHU, NIT Bhopal, University of Allahabad, BHU, IIIT-A, HBTI, IET Lucknow.

Previous performers in Culrav include Farhan Akhtar, Suraj Jagan, Shruti Pathak, Shirley Setia, Euphoria, Ahsaan Qureshi, Zaeden and DJ MARNIK. Previous guest speakers include Munawwar Rana, Ashok Chakradhar, Ronnie Screwvala and Piyush Mishra.

The 2019 Culrav took place from 3 to 6 April. It had numerous event categories from dramatics, dance, arts, music, fashion, literary, photography and film-making. In addition to the major events there were numerous informals and stalls which provide entertainment in between the breaks as well. The first night's flagship event was "Kavyasandhya" where prolific poets from across the country perform. A band performance was also organised for the event "Rocktave".

Culrav is generally held over a duration of 4 days. Every year a theme is chosen and for Culrav 2019 it was "Amusement" with the caption "Rendezvous with Euphoria" .

Events

Anunaad

Anunaad is the musical event which was held across the 4 days of Culrav. In Culrav 2019 it had the following events: Voice of Culrav, G.O.A.T, Rocktave, Harmony, Euphony. [3]

Spunk band performed as the main event in Rocktave. [4]

Rangmanch

Rangmanch is conducted under the purview of Alchemy- the Official Dramatic Club of MNNIT. [5] It consists of the following events:

  1. Hasyamanch: Earlier known as 'Nautanki', it is a comedic piece which often uses satire, histrionics and bucolic settings to achieve comey set up on a social message.
  2. Nukkad: The street play where social taboo topics like marital rape, LGBT, sex education to widely resounding truths such as corruption, drug addiction, women empowerment, in order to send out a social commentary performed outdoor. Street play is considered to be the rawest form of acting, because one does not have access to speakers or microphones.
  3. Natyamanch: The stage play is performed inside the Multipurpose Hall, and is known for exhibiting the theatrical prowess of the students and draws in large crowds.
  4. Pratibimb: Also known as mono-act competition where a single actor is required to captivate the audience in a given duration solely by using props on stage and acting skill.

Stand-up comedy was added in Culrav 2019 seeing the increased craze for stand-up comedy.

Litmuse

It's a literary event held under the umbrage of Literary Club of MNNIT, with myriad of events such as Kavyanjali, Vaktavya, Hasya Kosh, Talk till you drop, Motley, Lacuzzi, Poetry Slam and 'Sansadiya vaad vivad pratigya'. It is for both English and Hindi-speakers. [6]

Darkroom

This is the Photography and Filmography section of Culrav. It has under it aegis multitude of events ranging from "Once upon a time" to 50-hours film making. It is supervised by the Media House of MNNIT. [7]

Razzmatazz

Razzmatazz is the dancing event where solo as well as team dancing skills are displayed. [8] In Culrav 2k19, Shubham Sharma a participant of India's Got Talent came to judge. The sub events are as follows:

  1. Step Up: This is the duo dancing competition.
  2. Shimmy Shake: The solo styled event.
  3. Desi Sync: The multicultural theme pervades this event from Marathi, Rajasthani, Garba to South Indian folk, we can witness a culmination of Indian styles on stage.
  4. Feet on Fire: A western-themed event, whose content ranges from gravity defying moves to rhythmic sequences and from hip-hop to contemporary.

Spandan

The uber glamorous fashion event of Culrav has attracted large crowds and is a testament that ramp walks are still in fashion. There is a team event and a Mr. & Mrs Spandan, where in individual participants go through a selection similar to beauty pageants.

Rangsaazi

The art fest has attracted many students for its themes and settings. The Arts Club is designated to choose a theme for the entire Culrav Event.

In India, a cultural festival, cultfest, culfest or college fest is an annual cultural event at a college or university organised by the student community, involving participants from other colleges as well. Fests are usually funded through sponsors, although some colleges have begun exploring the idea of crowdfunding.

Festember is a cultural festival organised at National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (NITT). It is a 4-day event held annually in the third week of September. With humble beginnings as a fest with zero rupee budget allocation, it grew rapidly with sponsorships and collaborations. Unmaad is the annual cultural festival presented by Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. Waves is the annual cultural festival of BITS Pilani, K K Birla Goa Campus. It is a three-day-long festival held in the late October – early November period. It is a cultural festival that is held annually to celebrate music, dance and art. It is an inter college festival with students coming in to participate in events and competitions from all over the country.

Kashiyatra, also known as KY, is the annual socio-cultural festival of Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi. It is a four-day long mega event held in January every year, and is one of the most prominent college festivals in India. Kashiyatra is one of the largest socio-culture festivals in Asia where 360+ colleges/universities take part.

Alcheringa, also known as "Alcher", is the annual cultural festival of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati. The festival was started in 1996 by a group of students of IIT Guwahati. Spread over 3 days and 4 nights, Alcheringa is conducted towards the end of January every year. The 27th edition of Alcheringa was held from 2nd February 2023 to 5th February 2023, witnessing 80+ events.

Thomso is the annual cultural fest of Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee. Established in 1982, the festival is held over a span of three days at the end of October and the beginning of November. The 2018 edition consisted of over 150+ events and hosted 9000+ guest students from 200 colleges across India, in addition to more than 12,000 students from the hosting institution.

Sparsh is the annual cultural festival of the Sardar Vallabhai National Institute of Technology. It usually takes place in the second or third week of february, and is one of the largest of its kind in the western region. This festival consists of mega-attractions, informal events, managerial events and numerous other competitions. The festivities of the day are followed by "Sparsh Nights - the Inaugural Night, Singing Night, Dancing Night, EDM Night and Celebrity Night.

<i>Finders, Keepers</i> (Saxena novel)

Finders, Keepers is a novel by Sapan Saxena. The story takes place across the Indian subcontinent starting from the holy town of Allahabad. The story takes place at various places of spiritual importance in India. The novel deals with mythological themes, highlighting a conflict between a newly active historical sect worshipping Shiva and a powerful secret organization, the Nine Unknown Men.

Riviera is the Annual International Sports and Cultural Carnival of the Vellore Institute of Technology. It is an International 4-day event that consists of sports competitions, social and cultural events along with concerts. The 2016 edition of Riviera witnessed a footfall of more than 30,000 students from over 650 colleges from across the country. It is organised primarily by the students of the college. It has a wide variety of competitions and events, which range from dramatic, literary, musical, dance, debate events all the way to informal events. It is usually held in the month of February every year.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Highway 69 (band)</span> Indian metal band

Highway 69 is an Indian heavy metal band. The band was formed in 2012 in Ranchi by vocalist Tarang Kerketta and guitarist Alvin Rozario, and has been based in Ranchi ever since its formation. The band has been the winners of numerous battle of band titles across their country and is known for their fast tempos, instrumental and aggressive style of playing. The band has performed twice as the finalists at Hornbill International Rock Contest of Hornbill Festival in Nagaland for the year 2017 and 2018. Their drummer has also bagged the title of the 'Best Drummer' in the year 2017 at this festival and was felicitated by Uday Benegal from the Indus Creed which is a band considered to be the pioneers of the Indian rock music.

Oasis is the annual cultural festival of the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. Started back in 1971, it is one of the oldest cultural festivals in India. It is usually held towards the end of October every year. Events are organized for a continuous duration of 96 hours and are completely managed by the student body. It hosts a variety of events in various categories like Dance, Drama, Literature, Comedy, Fashion and Music. The festival is organized with a different theme every year. In 2022, the festival will observe golden jubilee and the official theme selected is Chapter 50: Demesne of The Lost Gold.
