Cynthia Pusheck (born 1964) is an American film and television cinematographer. She co-founded and co-chairs the ASC Vision committee that supports people from under-represented groups who hope to build a career in cinematography. [1] [2] She was the first woman to serve as Vice-President of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC). [2]

Early life

Cynthia Pusheck was born in the Chicago area, and was raised in Rockford, Illinois. [3] She attended Columbia College Chicago before moving to Los Angeles.

Cinematography

As a camera assistant, Pusheck specialised in underwater cinematography under the guidance of Peter Romano. She worked on Free Willy , White Squall , Flipper , Waterworld , Alien Resurrection , Speed 2: Cruise Control , Baywatch and Sphere . She was the camera operator on the underwater sequences in Magnolia , Men of Honor , Tomorrow Never Dies and A Nightmare on Elm Street . [3]

She took a job as a camera operator on CSI:Miami in 2003, where she gained her first experience as a Director of Photography (DP) on the second unit. [3] [1] Puskheck then studied cinematography at the American Film Institute for a year in order to improve her qualifications as a cinematographer. [3]

Pusheck has been DP on a range of television/streaming shows, most notably Brothers and Sisters , Revenge , Good Girls Revolt , Strange Angel , Sacred Lies , and The Bold Type. [1] She has also been DP on the independent feature film Loving Annabelle . [4]

Pusheck joined the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) in 2013, [3] and became the first woman to be elected Vice President in 2017. [5] She held the VP role until 2019. [6]

Recognition

Pusheck received the Kodak Vision Award at the 2010 Women in Film Crystal + Lucy Awards. [7] [8]

David Russell Boyd, A.S.C. is an American cinematographer and director of television and film known for his role as director of photography for the Fox television series Firefly and the AMC series The Walking Dead. He also worked as cinematographer on the first three episodes of HBO's Deadwood. On the NBC television series Friday Night Lights he served as director of photography on 18 of 22 episodes in the first season and moved up to direct two more. He also directed the film Home Run, which was released in 2013.

Dean Semler ACS ASC is an Australian cinematographer and film director. Over his career, he has worked as a cinematographer, camera operator, director, second unit director, and assistant director. He is a three-time recipient of the AACTA Award for Best Cinematography and an Academy Award winner. He is a member of both the Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) and the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC). In 2002 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).

Matthew Frank Leonetti A.S.C. is an American cinematographer. Accomplished and highly prolific, he has worked on dozens of well-known and acclaimed films spanning numerous genres, including Poltergeist, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Weird Science, Jagged Edge, Strange Days, and Star Trek: First Contact. He has collaborated with directors such as Tobe Hooper, Walter Hill, John Hughes, Kenneth Branagh, Kathryn Bigelow, Zack Snyder, and The Farrelly Brothers.

Thomas Richmond was an American cinematographer who worked in the film industry since the mid-1980s. His first major feature film as cinematographer was Stand and Deliver (1988), and by the time he shot for A Midnight Clear (1992), he had settled into working with different directors with ease. Richmond described his experience, "All my films look different because they're not my visions; they're my reflections of the directors' visions." In 1998, he said he was most proud of his work on Little Odessa (1994), for which he was nominated an Independent Spirit Award for Best Cinematography. For Right at Your Door (2006), he won the Excellence in Cinematography Award (Dramatic) at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival.

Hoyte van Hoytema, ASC, is a Dutch cinematographer who studied at the National Film School in Łódź. His work includes Let the Right One In (2008), The Fighter (2010), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), Her (2013), the James Bond film Spectre (2015), Ad Astra (2019), and Nope (2022). Van Hoytema is also known for his collaborations with director Christopher Nolan, having shot Interstellar (2014), Dunkirk (2017), Tenet (2020), and Oppenheimer (2023). Ernest Day, B.S.C. was a British cinematographer and director of film and television, known for his collaborations with David Lean and Lewis Gilbert. He spent the majority of his career as a camera operator, often referred to Lean as his "eyes", and was the first British cameraman to operate a 70mm film camera. He was nominated for an Academy Award and BAFTA Award for Lean's final film A Passage to India (1984).

Polly Morgan is a British cinematographer who has worked on the studio feature films Lucy in the Sky (2019), A Quiet Place Part II (2020), Where the Crawdads Sing (2022), and The Woman King (2022). She was also the cinematographer for multiple episodes of the TV series Legion (2017–2019). Morgan is accredited by the British Society of Cinematographers (BSC) and the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC). To date, she is the only woman to be a member of both, and she is the youngest member of ASC.

Colin Watkinson is an English cinematographer. He won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series for "Offred", the pilot episode of The Handmaid's Tale, and was nominated in the same category for subsequent series. He was director of photography for Tarsem Singh's The Fall in 2006.

Judith Carol Irola was an American cinematographer, film producer, and director. The third woman accepted into the American Society of Cinematographers, she was head of the cinematography department at USC School of Cinematic Arts for 15 years and held the Conrad Hall Chair in Cinematography there. Irola co-founded a National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians branch in San Francisco in 1969, and was a founding member of the short-lived Cine Manifest film collective in 1972.

Marcell Rév is a Hungarian cinematographer. He is best known for the HBO series Euphoria and the films Malcolm & Marie (2021) and Assassination Nation (2018).
