Cyril John Evans was a thoracic surgeon who was responsible for establishing the cardiothoracic department at Morriston Hospital, which is a hospital of the Swansea Bay University Health Board.

Early life

Evans was born on 12 June, 1915 in Llandysul. His father, William, was a postmaster and his mother was Letitia (Morgan). [1]

Career

He studied at Cardiff University and University College Hospital, London. In 1938 he qualified as a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and as a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians. In 1939 he qualified as a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and, in 1946, he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He was a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland. [1]

He worked under Thomas Sellors, and Vernon Thompson in London and George Mason at Shotley Bridge Hospital. He also trained in hospitals at Blackburn, Manchester, Newcastle and Reading. In 1952 he was appointed as a thoracic surgeon to the South Wales Hospital Authority and shortly after that he established the cardiothoracic surgery centre at Morriston Hospital with the help of Dan Danino. [1]

Personal life

He was interested in music and amateur radio. He married Nancy J Parnaby, a radiographer, in 1949 and they had four sons. He retired in 1983. [1]

Professor Sir Bruce Edward Keogh, KBE, FMedSci, FRCS, FRCP is a Rhodesian-born British surgeon who specialises in cardiac surgery. He was medical director of the National Health Service in England from 2007 and national medical director of the NHS Commissioning Board from 2013 until his retirement early in 2018. Nagarur Gopinath was an Indian surgeon and one of the pioneers of cardiothoracic surgery in India. He is credited with the first successful performance of open heart surgery in India which he performed in 1962. He served as the honorary surgeon to two Presidents of India and was a recipient of the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri in 1974 and Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian medical award in 1978 from the Government of India.

Stanley John was an Indian cardiothoracic surgeon, a former professor at the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) and one of the pioneers of cardiothoracic surgery in India. He is reported to have performed the first surgical repairs of Ebstein's anomaly, Ruptured Sinus of Valsalva (RSOV) and Double Outlet Right Ventricle (DORV) in India. He assisted in performing the first open heart surgery in India while working at CMCH. During his tenure of 25 years at the institution, he mentored several known surgeons such as V.V. Bashi, A. G. K. Gokhale, J. S. N. Murthy and Ganesh Kumar Mani. Later, John joined Yellamma Dasappa Hospital, Bengaluru at the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Andrew Logan, FRCS, FRCSEd was a British cardiothoracic surgeon. For most of his career he worked in Edinburgh where he established the specialty of cardio-thoracic surgery. He devised a mitral valve dilator to treat mitral stenosis and this technique, modified by Oswald Tubbs and by Russell Brock, became widely used to treat this condition. He assisted at the first pneumonectomy in the UK and performed the first lung transplant in the UK.

Gaudino, MD, PhD, MSCE, FEBCTS, FACC, FAHA is an Italian cardiothoracic surgeon who is the Stephen and Suzanne Weiss Professor in Cardiothoracic Surgery (II) and Professor of Clinical Epidemiology and Health Services Research at Weill Cornell Medicine and an attending cardiac surgeon at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical Center. He is an expert in coronary revascularization and clinical trialist. He is known for conducting the PALACS trial, which demonstrated that posterior pericardiotomy at the time of cardiac surgery reduced the incidence of post-operative atrial fibrillation and pericardial effusion.

Emmanuel Andrew Danino was born on 12 February, 1911 in Gibraltar. He was a consultant physician at Morriston Hospital, and Singleton Hospital which are hospitals of the Swansea Bay University Health Board.
