Udupi Rajagopalacharya Ananthamurthy was an Indian contemporary writer and critic in the Kannada language. He was born in Thirtahalli Taluk and is considered one of the pioneers of the Navya movement. In 1994,he became the sixth Kannada writer to be honored with the Jnanpith Award,the highest literary honour conferred in India. In 1998,he received the Padma Bhushan award from the Government of India. He was the vice-chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University in Kerala during the late 1980s. He was one of the finalists of Man Booker International Prize for the year 2013. He remained a fervent critic of nationalistic political parties until his death from kidney failure and cardiac arrest on 22 August 2014.
Siddaramaiah,also referred to by his nickname Siddu,Siddaramaiah served as Chief Minister of Karnataka from 13 May 2013 to 17 May 2018 and currently serving as the leader of the opposition in Karnataka Legislative Assembly since 9 December 2019. Gauri Lankesh was an Indian activist and former journalist from Bangalore,Karnataka. She worked as an editor in Lankesh Patrike,a Kannada weekly started by her father P. Lankesh,and ran her own weekly called Gauri Lankesh Patrike. She was assassinated outside her home in Rajarajeshwari Nagar on 5 September 2017. At the time of her death,Gauri was known for being a critic of right-wing Hindu extremism. She was honoured with Anna Politkovskaya Award for speaking against right-wing Hindu extremism,campaigning for women's rights and opposing caste based discrimination.

On the night of 11 August and the early hours of 12 August 2020,violent clashes took place around the residence of a legislator and the police stations of KG Halli and DJ Halli of the Indian city of Bangalore,Karnataka. Provoked by an inflammatory Facebook post on Muhammad that was allegedly shared by the nephew of Akhanda Srinivas Murthy,a state legislator of the Indian National Congress,a group of Muslims arrived at his house in protest which later turned violent.
