Miami bass is a subgenre of hip hop music that became popular in the 1980s and 1990s. The use of the Roland TR-808, sustained kick drum, heavy bass, raised dance tempos, and frequently sexually explicit lyrical content differentiate it from other hip hop subgenres. Music author Richie Unterberger has characterized Miami bass as using rhythms with a "stop-start flavor" and "hissy" cymbals with lyrics that "reflected the language of the streets, particularly Miami's historically black neighborhoods such as Liberty City, Goulds and Overtown".
Scratching, sometimes referred to as scrubbing, is a DJ and turntablist technique of moving a vinyl record back and forth on a turntable to produce percussive or rhythmic sounds. A crossfader on a DJ mixer may be used to fade between two records simultaneously.

Rare groove is soul or jazz music that is very hard to source or relatively obscure. Rare groove is primarily associated with funk, R&B and jazz funk, but is also connected to subgenres including jazz rock, reggae, Latin jazz, soul, rock music, northern soul, and disco. Rare groove records have been sought by not only collectors and lovers of this type of music, but also by hip-hop artists and producers.
Florida breaks, which may also be referred to as The Orlando Sound, Orlando breaks, or The Breaks, is a genre of breakbeat dance music that originated in the central region of the State of Florida, United States. Florida Breaks originates from a mixture of hip-hop, Miami bass and electro that often includes recognizable sampling of early jazz or funk beats from rare groove or popular film. Florida's breakbeat style feature vocal elements and retains the hip-hop rhythms on which is based. The Florida breakbeat style however is faster, more syncopated, and has a heavier and unrelenting bassline. The beat frequently slows and breaks down complex beat patterns and then rebuilds. The genre has been described as being easy to dance to while creating an uplifting, happy, or positive mood in the listener.

CKUT-FM is the official campus community radio station of McGill University. It can be heard at 90.3 FM in Montreal, 91.7 on cable, or on the CKUT website. CKUT's FM signal, broadcast from a tower on the top of Mount Royal, reaches as far as the Eastern Townships and upstate New York. CKUT is consistently voted as the Best Radio Station in The Montreal Mirror's, "Cult Montreal" Best of Montreal Readers Poll.
WEFUNK is a weekly radio show held on Montreal's CKUT 90.3, McGill University's radio station since 1996 and online since 1999. The show is usually very light on talk as both DJs Professor Groove and DJ Static play a symbiotic mix of Funk, Soul, R&B and Rap, both old and new. The name of the radio show comes from the Parliament song "P. Funk ", in which WEFUNK is a fictional radio station broadcasting "directly from the Mothership, top of the Chocolate Milky Way, 500,000 kilowatts of P Funk-power."
Carter "Fever One" McGlasson is a b-boy and DJ originally from Seattle, Washington who relocated to New York City in 1997 and eventually joined the world-famous Rock Steady Crew. He is most well known for his 'gunzblazin' style which he developed while studying with his mentors Icey Ice and Lil' Lep of the New York City Breakers.
DJ Skitz or Skitz is a British DJ and music producer. He was born in 1970 in Cambridgeshire and started DJing in 1991. He has compiled a number of British Hip Hop compilations and other Hip Hop compilations. Along with Rodney P he produced the first track to ever be played on BBC Radio 1Xtra in 2002, when the station launched; the BBC called Skitz a "hip-hop star". They also presented a weekly show on the station called "Original Fever", which formed the backbone of the radio station, until 2007. The Independent considered it the "show of the week" on the radio station. In 2008 he competed in the DMC UK DJ Championship. He had also created his own record label, Titan Sounds.

He was a member of the turntablist crew the Terntable Jediz. He is also a member of the Brisbane new jazz and funk band Step It Up.

Nomadic Massive is an independent hip-hop supergroup based in Montreal, Quebec, active in the scene since 2004. They have achieved notoriety in Canada, United States, Brazil and France among many international venues. The membership of the band varies depending on song, but their ensemble includes rappers, singers, keyboardists, saxophone, trumpets, trombone, guitarists, bass, and drums. Many of the members are multi-instrumentalists and trade spots on stage. The official members are vocalists Waahli, Taliwah, Meryem Saci, Lou Piensa, as well as musicians Butta Beats and Ali Sepu. With lyrics in diverse languages including English, French, Creole, Spanish and Arabic, Nomadic Massive celebrates global music interpreted through an Afro-Latin twist with hip-hop as the main medium of expression. They have been a staple of the Montreal International Jazz Festival for several years.
