Gorillaz are an English virtual band formed in 1998 by musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett, from London, England. The band primarily consists of four animated members: 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs (drums). Their fictional universe is presented in music videos, interviews, comic strips and short cartoons. Gorillaz' music often features collaborations with a wide range of featured artists, with Albarn as the only permanent musical contributor.

The Escape to Plastic Beach Tour was a concert tour by the British alternative rock virtual band Gorillaz. The tour was in support of their third studio album Plastic Beach. It was notably the band's first world tour in its decade-spanning history. During the tour, Damon Albarn recorded The Fall, described by Albarn as a "diary of [his] experience" during the American leg of the tour. The album was released in late December 2010 to fan club members, and physically in April 2011.

Jupiter Bokondji is a musician from Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He and his band, Okwess International, released their first album, Hotel Univers, in May 2013 in the United Kingdom. The band was created in 1990, and they toured the African continent. However, at the same time that their popularity grew, a civil war broke out in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Some band members fled to Europe to escape violence, but Bokondji stayed in Kinshasa. As the war died down, his popularity grew again, and in 2006 he was featured in the documentary Jupiter's Dance. This brought him to the attention of U.K. producers and musicians, which led to him joining the African Express tour, the production of Hotel Univers, and performing at the 2013 Glastonbury Festival.

Remi Kabaka Jr. is a British record producer, art director, percussionist and voice actor best known as the drummer and producer for British virtual band Gorillaz. He became a music producer for the band in 2015 after several years of providing the voice of Russel Hobbs and was listed as an A&R producer alongside Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett in the 2019 documentary Gorillaz: Reject False Icons. In 2007, Kabaka created the audiovisual collective Gorillaz Sound System.
