In the poem "Kiln", the fourteenth of the Epigrams attributed to Homer, five malevolent spirits are described as plaguing the craftsman potter:

  1. Sýntrips (Σύντριψ; Suntrips; [ˈsyn.trips] ) the smasher (to break, to crush; syntríbô)
  2. Smáragos (Σμάραγος; Smaragus; [ˈzma.ra.gos] ) the crasher (smash, crash; smaragéô)
  3. Ásbetos (Ἄσβετος; Asbetus; [ˈaz.be.tos] ) or Ásbestos (Ἄσβεστος; or Asbestus; [ˈaz.bes.tos] ) the charrer (unquenchable, inextinguishable; ásbestos)
  4. Sabáktes (Σαβάκτης; Sabactes; [saˈbak.tεːs] ) the destroyer [1] (shatter, destroy; sabázô)
  5. Omódamos (Ὠμόδαμος; Omodamus; [ɔːˈmo.da.mos] ) crudebake[ dubious discuss ] (crude, raw, uncooked; ômós)
