Duquesne University of the Holy Spirit is a private Catholic research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Founded by members of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, Duquesne first opened as the Pittsburgh Catholic College of the Holy Ghost in October 1878 with an enrollment of 40 students and a faculty of six. In 1911, the college became the first Catholic university-level institution in Pennsylvania. It is named for an 18th-century governor of New France, Michel-Ange Duquesne de Menneville.

Suzie McConnell-Serio is a former American women's basketball coach and player. She was the head coach for the women's basketball team at the University of Pittsburgh from 2013 to 2018. Eddie Benton, Jr. is an American college women's basketball coach, former assistant coach for the women's program at Mississippi State University. He is best known for his collegiate playing career at the University of Vermont between 1992 and 1996. In his senior season he was named the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award winner, given annually to the best college senior player in the country who is 6 ft 0 in (1.83 m) or shorter. Benton then had a short-lived professional career before becoming a college coach.

The Duquesne Dukes are the athletic teams of Duquesne University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Dukes compete in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association as members of the Atlantic 10 Conference. Football and bowling, however, compete in the Northeast Conference.

The Pittsburgh Panthers men's basketball team is the NCAA Division I intercollegiate men's basketball program of the University of Pittsburgh, often referred to as "Pitt", located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Pitt men's basketball team competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and plays their home games in the Petersen Events Center. Tasha Butts was an American basketball player. She played for the Minnesota Lynx of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). She was an assistant coach at several NCAA schools over 17 seasons. She was hired as the head coach of the Georgetown Hoyas women's basketball team, but died of breast cancer before her first game as a head coach.

The Duquesne Dukes represent Duquesne University in college basketball. The team, which started in 1914, has only ever played in NCAA Division I and has had six appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Dan Burt resumed the responsibility as head coach for a 2nd consecutive season. The Dukes are members of the Atlantic 10 Conference and played their home games at the A. J. Palumbo Center. They finished the season 23–11, 12–4 in A-10 play to finish in third place. They advanced to the semifinals of the A-10 women's tournament where they lost to Dayton. They were invited to the Women's National Invitation Tournament where they defeated Youngstown State in the first round, Richmond in the second round before losing to West Virginia in the third round.

The Dukes were members of the Atlantic 10 Conference and play their home games at the Palumbo Center. They finished the season 28–6, 13–3 in A-10 play to share the A-10 regular season title with George Washington and Saint Louis. They advanced to the championship game of the A-10 women's tournament where they lost to George Washington. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA women's tournament for the first time in school history where they defeated Seton Hall in the first round before getting blown out by Connecticut in the second round. With 28 wins in the regular season, the most wins in school history.

They finished the season 19–13, 11–5 in A-10 play to finish in third place. They advance to the semifinals of the A-10 women's tournament where they lost to Fordham. Despite having 19 wins, they were not invited to a postseason tournament for the first time since 2008.

The 2019–20 NCAA Division I women's basketball season began in November 2019 and concluded prematurely on March 12, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2020 NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament was scheduled to end at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, Louisiana on April 5, 2020, but was ultimately canceled. All other postseason tournaments were canceled as well. It was the first cancellation in the history of the NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament. Practices officially began in late September 2019.

The Dukes, led by eleventh-year head coach Dan Burt, play their home games at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference.
