Dan Harder is a San Francisco-based writer who taught English and philosophy at the International High School in San Francisco. [1] He graduated from UC Berkeley in an Individual Major that combined Sociology, Cognitive Science, and Architecture. Subsequently, he moved to France for three years before settling in the Bay Area. [2]
Harder writes poetry, stage plays, opera librettos, novels, children’s books, and journalism.
He devised “zipper poetry” in which he zips two poems into a third by interlinking the lines of each of the two separate poems. The sum of the parts becomes a whole new whole. [3] According to Harder’s self-imposed rules, each poem must be able to stand alone and make sense semantically and syntactically. The first fully realized exploration of this form was in his poetry book, Askew (2007). [4]
This was followed by an opera (music by Nathaniel Stookey) commissioned by Michael Morgan of the Oakland East Bay Symphony entitled Zipperz (2008) [5] which was subsequently recorded and released by Ghostlight/Sh-K-Boom/Warner records (2017). [6] As a composer, Stookey was attracted to Harder’s zippered format because, like music, it is distinctly contrapuntal — two parts are independent and self-sufficient but together form a harmonious whole. [7] Because of this formal style, the narrative of Zipperz simultaneously interweaves the attractions, fears, joys, and insights of a man and woman who meet, date, and -- eventually in love – zip their lives together. [8]
The zippered form was also used with three voices in his stage play A Killer Story (2013) [9] and was featured in The Untouchables…, a series of his poems about the unhoused published on the front page of the Opinion Section, San Francisco Chronicle (2018). [10]
Harder and composer Carlos Simon have created a dramatic oratorio, “Here I Stand” about famous singer and civil rights activist Paul Robeson that will be premiered by the Oakland East Bay Symphony then travel to The Kennedy Center in 2024. [11]
Harder has also written 2 children’s books Colliding with Chris [12] and A Child's California, [13] as well as numerous features and articles [14] for the Los Angeles Times, [15] the San Francisco Chronicle [16] and commentaries for NPR, [17] 2 photo-essay books, [18] [19] numerous stage plays, [20] [21] and a novel, Rancho de Amor. [22]

Symphony Silicon Valley is the professional symphony orchestra of San Jose and the South Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. Founded in 2002 following the demise of the San Jose Symphony, the orchestra debuted to rave reviews and standing ovations on November 23, 2002 at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. Started initially by Ballet San Jose as a way to keep their core musicians employed and in town after the closure of the San Jose Symphony, the orchestra was so successful that it was spun off as its own separate nonprofit organization after the first year.
Mission Creek Music and Arts Festival (MCMAF), also known as Mission Creek, and Mission Creek Oakland Music and Arts Festival, was a week-long volunteer-driven music festival active from 1996 to 2017, and located in San Francisco and later Oakland, California. It featured local, experimental, and contemporary artists who have made an impact on the local community scene. The festival prided itself on showcasing fledgling musicians and artists who go on to headline their own shows. The festival was a grassroots project that took a hard stance against corporate sponsorship.
Joseph Frederick Brent is an American composer, mandolinist, multi-instrumentalist, and teacher. He is known for his performances and arrangements of rock and indie songs, as well as his original compositions with the ensemble 9 Horses. He teaches classical mandolin at Mannes College.

The Stud was a queer bar located in South of Market, San Francisco, closed in May 2020. It was started by associates George Matson and Alexis Muir on May 27, 1966. According to George Matson, it was a "bar for people, not just pretty bodies". Originally, the Stud was located at 1535 Folsom Street; in 1987, it moved to its current location at Ninth and Harrison Streets. The Stud was known for its themed parties, drag and burlesque shows, and community events. It was also home of the famous Trannyshack, a weekly drag show that featured all different types of drag and drag stars from 1996 until 2008.
West Edge Opera is an opera company based in the East Bay. Originally known as Berkeley Opera, the company was created in 1979 by Richard Goodman, an opera enthusiast and professor at UC Berkeley. The company changed its name to West Edge Opera after losing its performance space at Berkeley's Julia Morgan Theater and moving to El Cerrito. Since then, the company has been known for its frequent moves and unconventional performance spaces. These have included the abandoned 16th Street train station and the Pacific Pipe warehouse, both in Oakland. After a crackdown on alternative performance spaces due to the 2016 Ghost Ship fire, the company moved to the Craneway Convention Center, a former automobile assembly plant in Richmond for its 2018 season. For the 2019 season, West Edge Opera performed in Oakland's Bridge Yard near the Bay Bridge. The site was once a maintenance building for the now-defunct Key System trains.
Them Are Us Too was an American dream pop and darkwave band, consisting of Kennedy Ashlyn and Cash Askew. The duo formed in 2012 while both were students at University of California, Santa Cruz. After signing to Dais Records, they released their debut album Remain. Askew died in the Ghost Ship warehouse fire in 2016, after which Ashlyn finished their second album Amends, retired the Them Are Us Too name, and began releasing solo music as SRSQ.
Rachel Lark is a composer, mutli-instrumentalist and folk punk singer-songwriter based in New York City and the Bay Area. Known for her sex-positive songs and activism, she has been regularly featured on Savage Love with Dan Savage. Rachel is also a writer of theatrical musicals, screenplays, and TV.
