Dana Johnson (born 1967) is an American writer and Associate Professor at the University of Southern California. [1] Honors include the Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction, and being named a nominee for the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award. Her writing has appeared in Callaloo , The Iowa Review, and elsewhere.
Dana Johnson was born in Los Angeles in 1967, daughter to two working-class people who came from Tennessee looking for a better life. [2] [3] When she was nine, Dana and her parents moved. She grew up in what was then called South Central LA, on the corner of 80th and Vermont, and moved to the suburbs. [4] Here, she experienced the huge difference between the various parts of California. [5] This would later provide the writer with inspiration and creativity to write, even though this profession would make her the odd one out in her working-class family. [6] In her twenties, Dana left Los Angeles to study at the University of Indiana, majoring in print journalism at USC with a minor in creative writing. [7] Dana started writing seriously when she started her classes at UCLA extension and later when she went to graduate school at Indiana University to get her Master of Fine Arts. [8] She returned to her hometown after completing her studies, settling at the then newly gentrified Echo Park. [9] She is happily married to her husband, who is from Alabama. [10] Dana is also a huge baseball fan, supporting the Dodgers in true LA spirit, a club she had gotten to know because her father had started taking her to games long before she even knew what she was looking at. [11] Dana Johnson is now a celebrated author and a professor of English at the University of Southern California. [12] She also serves as director of the PhD in Creative Writing and Literature Program. [13] She was first published in the American Literary Review (University of North Texas) and the Missouri Review (University of Missouri). [14]
Johnson’s works are partly based on her own experiences with living in different parts of Los Angeles and its surrounding areas. [15] [16] With her works she wants to show the varied sides of Los Angeles that are not usually given attention. [17] [18] Race, class consciousness and gender are major themes in her works. [19] Throughout her works, she specifically focuses on the ways race, class and gender can intersect and inform a person’s identity and on the identity crisis that can come with this. [20] [21] Other topics that feature prominently in her works are assimilation, [22] income inequality, gentrification and homelessness. [23]
Although a lot of her work is about African-American people, she does not want to be put in a box: “I reject the idea that as a black woman, I’m relegated to writing black women exclusively. That is not what being a writer is for me.” [24] She simply wants to write about humans. [25]
Johnson has been greatly influenced by Lou Matthews about whom she has said: [He] “was the first to encourage me, who told me I had some skills. I’ve known him for more than 25 years and he continues to be someone I look to.” [26] Other authors that have inspired her are
James Baldwin, Raymond Carver, Studs Terkel, John Edgar Wideman, Mary Gaitskill, Junot Díaz, bell hooks, John Fante, Helena María Viramontes, Toni Cade Bambara and Chris Ware. [27]
Break Any Woman Down: Stories (2001)
Johnson’s first book, Break Any Woman Down, which was published while she was at graduate school at the University of Indiana, earned her the Flannery O’Connor Award for short fiction. [28] Break Any Woman Down is a collection of nine short stories. [29] Most, but not all, of the stories center around African-American women from Southern California who are trying to find their own identity. Struggles they encounter include problems with fitting in within the suburbs and problems in romantic relationships with white men. [30]
Elsewhere, California (2012)
Elsewhere, California, Johnson’s first novel, continues the story of Avery who also featured in two short stories in Break Any Woman Down. [31] The novel is about one day in the life of Avery as an adult but this main narrative is interspersed with flashbacks to her childhood to show how she got to where she is now. [32] Avery struggles with an identity crisis that stems from the fact that she is an African-American woman from a working-class family who has generally succeeded in life and has become middle class. She is also married to an Italian man which further complicates her identity. [33]
In the Not Quite Dark: Stories (2016)
In the Not Quite Dark is Johnson's most recent publication, a collection of eleven stories that take place in and around Los Angeles. [34] In the short stories, Johnson uses various characters to explore and discuss issues central to society such as race, class, and love. [35] In order to do this, she picks the non-polished LA as a backdrop, and chooses to tell the stories that otherwise would get lost in the jumble of the city. [36]
Dorinne K. Kondo is a professor of American studies and Ethnicity and Anthropology at the University of Southern California. She is a scholar, playwright, and has over 20 years of work experience in dramaturge; her work shows the structural inequality of race and ethnicities in the world of contemporary theatre. Her writings discuss issues on power, gender inequality, the discourses in a Japanese workplace, and racism in the fashion industry.
Danzy Senna is an American novelist and essayist. She is the author of six books and numerous essays about race, gender and American identity, including Caucasia (1998), Symptomatic (2003), and New People (2017), named by Time as one of the Top Ten Novels of the year. In July 2024 she will publish her sixth novel, Colored Television. Her writing has appeared in The New Yorker,The Atlantic,Vogue, and The New York Times. She is a professor of English at the University of Southern California.

Duncan Ryūken Williams is a scholar, writer, and Soto Zen Buddhist priest who is currently professor of religion and East Asian languages and cultures at the University of Southern California. The Center for the Political Future is a non-partisan center housed in the University of Southern California's Dornsife College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The center was established in order to combat uncivil political discourse and promote bipartisan, fact-based dialogue on national issues. The Center for the Political Future hosts conferences, offers a Fellows program, hosts an ongoing dialogue series called Political Conversations, and provides a neutral ground for political discourse in "off-the-record policy workshops" with top experts from relevant disciplines, among other programs.
Irene Agnes McCulloch was a marine biologist and USC biological sciences professor. McCulloch started at the University of Southern California in 1924 where the marine biology research department lacked funding and resources. To better the research being done, McCulloch convinced George Allan Hancock to fund the G. Allan Hancock Foundation for Marine Research, which was then renamed the Hancock Institute for Marine Studies. McCulloch was given her own foundation in 1969 at USC to continue marine biology research. McCulloch studied microbes within the Pacific Ocean with her main focus being foraminifera.
Terisa Tinei Siagatonu is a Samoan spoken word poet, arts educator, and community organizer. In 2012, she was awarded a Champion of Change Award for her activism.
Carolyn Marino Malone is an American medievalist and academic. She is professor of art history and history at USC Dornsife College, Los Angeles, California, with a PhD in Art History and Medieval Studies (1973) from the University of California, Berkeley. Her research interests are English and French Romanesque and Gothic architecture and sculpture. She has published books on sculptural finds at Canterbury Cathedral, the abbey of St Bénigne in Dijon, the façade of Wells Cathedral, and monastic life in the Middle Ages. She served as Vice-President (1996-1997) and President (1999) of Art Historians of Southern California; Domestic Advisor to the Board of Directors of the International Center of Medieval Art (1984-1987); and was on the board of directors of the Medieval Association of the Pacific (1986-1989). She is a member of the Society of Architectural Historians.
Ange-Marie Hancock is the Dean's Professor of Gender Studies and Professor of Political Science and Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of Southern California. Starting in January 2023, she will be the Executive Director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at the Ohio State University. Hancock is a political theorist and scholar of intersectionality. Hancock is also CEO of RISIST, the Research Institute for the Study of Intersectionality and Social Transformation.
