Danielle Skelley OBE MBA BEng CEng MICE FCIHT, known as Dana, is Managing Director of Grain of Sand Consulting Ltd. Prior to setting up her own consultancy business she was Director of Strategy and Operational Excellence at Skanska. She is a Council Member of the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation. She was Director of Asset Management at Transport for London.

Early life and education

Skelley was born and raised in London. [1] She studied civil engineering at Kingston University, graduating in 1987. [2] She was the only woman in her class of 150 civil engineers. [2]

Career

Skelley is a Chartered Civil Engineer. [3] She became chartered whilst working on the refurbishment of heritage bridges. [4] She became more interested in the business side of engineering, and completed a Master of Business Administration at the University of Bradford. [4] [5] She was appointed as Head of Consultancy Services at Wandsworth Council in 1989. [2] She joined Transport for London in 2000 as Principal Engineer for the City of London. [1] In 2006 she was promoted to Chief Engineer and became Head of the London-wide Road Network. [1] That year she was named Surveyor and Institution of Civil Engineers Municipals Engineer of the Year. [1] Skelley was made Director of Roads in 2008 and led a team of 500 engineers. [6] At Transport for London, Skelley was responsible for a £4 bn road modernisation plan, which included preparing the capital for the 2012 Summer Olympics, almost all of the Thames crossings and strengthening the Hammersmith flyover. [7] She led a team of 500 engineers. [8] She worked with FM Conway and Arizona Chemical to create environmentally friendly roads for London. [9] She partnered with Costain Group to refurbish the A40 road. [10] Skelley was a judge at the 2012 Institution of Engineering and Technology Young Woman Engineer of the Year award. [11]

Skelley is a champion for making efforts to engage young people with engineering. [12] She was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 2016 New Year Honours, "For services to Transport in the UK". [7] [13] She was included in the inaugural Top 50 Influential Women in Engineering in 2016. [14] [15] [16] In July 2017 Skelley joined Skanska. [17] [18] In 2017 Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation announced that Skelley had been appointed to the board of trustees. [19] She appeared on their podcast celebrating International Women in Engineering Day. [20] She gave the Worshipful Company of Paviors annual lecture at Imperial College London in 2017. [21]

In 2016 the Women's Engineering Society (WES), in collaboration with the Daily Telegraph, produced an inaugural list of the United Kingdom's Top 50 Influential Women in Engineering, which was published on National Women in Engineering Day on 23 June 2016. The event was so successful it became an annual celebration. The list was instigated by Dawn Bonfield MBE, then Chief Executive of the Women's Engineering Society. In 2019, WES ended its collaboration with the Daily Telegraph and started a new collaboration with The Guardian newspaper.

In 2016, she was elected as the youngest ever Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. She advocates the science and technology education of young people and promotion of careers in the space industry. Her public appearances have included the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures and The Sky at Night.

Rachel Susan Skinner is a British civil engineer with Canadian-based consultant WSP Global. She was named one of the Daily Telegraph Top 50 Influential Women in Engineering in 2016 and both the Best Woman Civil Engineer and the Most Distinguished Winner at the European Women in Construction and Engineering Awards in 2017. Skinner became the youngest president of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 2020. In 2019, she was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng). She was appointed CBE for services to infrastructure in the 2022 New Year Honours.

Michèle Dix CBE is a British civil engineer. She is the managing director of Crossrail 2 and had previously been the director of planning for Transport for London. In 2016, Dix was named as one of the Top 50 Influential Women in Engineering.

Linda Jean Miller is an American civil engineer who works for Bechtel. She is currently director of the excavation works for the Sydney Metro project, having recently been in charge of Crossrail's Farringdon Station.
