Daniel Butler is an Irish Fine Gael politician,who served as Mayor of Limerick from 2021 to 2022. He previously served as Limerick Metropolitan District Mayor from 2018 until the office was abolished in 2019. He has served on Limerick City and County Council for the Limerick City West electoral area since 2014. He is the Fine Gael candidate for the 2024 Limerick mayoral election. [1]
Butler was co-opted to Limerick City Council in February 2014,following the death of his father,Richard Butler,on 1 December 2013. [2] He was re-elected to the seat at the 2014 election,dedicating the win to his father. [3]
Butler served as Limerick Metropolitan Deputy Mayor from 2015 to 2016. On 25 June 2018,Butler was elected the final Limerick Metropolitan District Mayor. [4]
On 14 June 2019,Butler resigned after completing his term,with the office being renamed to Cathaoirleach of the Metropolitan District of Limerick. [5]
On 30 June 2021,Butler was appointed as Mayor of Limerick by Limerick City and County Council. [6]
On 25 June 2022,Jerry O'Dea,who was due to succeed Butler as mayor,died suddenly at the age of 55. The election of the new mayor was delayed by a week following his death. [7] On 7 July,Limerick City and County Council elected Francis Foley as Mayor,ending Butler's term in office. [8]
In April 2024,Butler was chosen as Fine Gael's candidate at the 2024 Limerick Mayoral election. [1] The then Minister for Further and Higher Education,Research,Innovation and Science,Patrick O'Donovan,was appointed by Fine Gael as his director of elections. [9]
Butler is married to Tania Butler,and they have two children. [10]

The Local Government Reform Act 2014 is an act of the Oireachtas which provided for a major restructuring of local government in Ireland with effect from the 2014 local elections. It merged some first-tier county and city councils,abolished all second-tier town and borough councils,and created a new second tier of municipal districts covering rural as well as urban areas. It also provided for a plebiscite on whether to create a directly elected executive Mayor of the Dublin Metropolitan Area although this provision was not activated. The act was introduced as a bill on 15 October 2013 by Phil Hogan,the Minister for the Environment,Community and Local Government,and signed into law on 27 January 2014 by President Michael D. Higgins. Most of its provisions came into force on 1 June 2014.
Limerick City and County Council is the local authority of Limerick City and County in Ireland. It came into operation on 1 June 2014 after the 2014 local elections. It was formed by the merger of Limerick City Council and Limerick County Council under the provisions of the Local Government Reform Act 2014. As a city and county council,it is governed by the Local Government Act 2001. The council is responsible for housing and community,roads and transportation,urban planning and development,amenity and culture,and environment. The council has 40 elected members. Elections are held every five years and are by single transferable vote. The head of the council has the title of Mayor. The city and county administration is headed by a Chief Executive,Pat Daly. The administrative centre is City Hall,Limerick,with other civic offices at Dooradoyle. Following a plebiscite in 2019,Limerick is due to become the first local authority in Ireland with a directly elected mayor.
An election to all 40 seats on Limerick City and County Council took place on 23 May 2014 as part of the 2014 Irish local elections,a reduction from an overall total of 45 seats at the previous elections and 28 at the 2009 County Council election).
