Daniel Elms (born October 1985) is a British composer of contemporary classical and electroacoustic music. [1] [2]
Elms was born in Kingston upon Hull and began composing as a teenager while studying the guitar. [3] He was awarded a scholarship by the Royal College of Music to study under Kenneth Hesketh, Joseph Horovitz, Peter Stark, and Carlos Bonell. [4] His study was supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, and the Countess of Munster Musical Trust. [5] [6] Elms is the recipient of the "Emerging Excellence" Award 2013 from the Musicians' Benevolent Fund. [7] [8]
Elms has described his own work as "post genre": [9] a musical style that is as likely to use principles of contemporary classical composition as it is to draw upon the instrumentation or aesthetics of electronica, punk, or any other genre. [10] This prism-like perspective of influence and instrumentation is notable in Elms' debut album Islandia, [11] particularly the work Bethia, composed for Hull City of Culture 2017, [12] in which he uses an abstraction of traditional sea shanties, sung by a male choir, which is offset by the contrapuntal chimes of a carillon and a piano, the ambience of sustained chords played by a synthesiser, and, in the latter half of the work, a strident — sometimes dissonant — trumpet. [13] [14] [15] All of this is accompanied by a projection of collaged and superimposed archival film, taken from the British Film Institute and assembled into a new form by videographer David Briggs. In Elms' music there is a focus on timbre and the time "in between notes"; [19] he sacrifices melody and accompaniment in favour of texture and impressionism, which, with the assistance of found sounds — in a manner similar to musique concrète — is often evocative of environments or landscapes. [20] [21] [22] The influence of "found art" is evident not only in the instrumentation of Elms' work, but in the subjects upon which his work is based, and from which he derives the harmonic content and integrity of his music. [23] [24]
Elms' debut album Islandia was released in 2019 on New Amsterdam Records. He mixed and produced the record, which was recorded at Abbey Road Studios. [25] The album was written while Elms was in residence at the home of composer Imogen Holst. [26]
BBC Radio 3 has featured Elms' music on shows by Hannah Peel, [27] Elizabeth Alker, [28] and Sara Mohr-Pietsch. [29] His music has been performed at venues including the Royal Festival Hall, [30] Kings Place, [31] Invisible Wind Factory, and the Stoller Hall. [32] In 2015 Elms was commissioned by the British Film Institute to create Bethia for Hull City of Culture 2017 as part of PRS Foundation's New Music Biennial. [33] The work premiered at Hull Minster on 30 June 2017, with a second performance at the Royal Festival Hall on 7 July 2017; a recording of the work was released by NMC Records. [34] Manchester Collective commissioned Elms in 2018 to create 100 Demons for string quartet and tape. The work, influenced by Hyakki Yagyō and the political turmoil of 2016–18, [35] showcases Elms' combination of subject, electroacoustic instrumentation, and found sound. [36] The work was performed across two national UK tours in 2018. [37] [38] In 2019 the BBC Concert Orchestra, in partnership with BBC Radio 3's Unclassified Live, commissioned a new orchestral work from Elms. [39] [40] The Royal Philharmonic Society commissioned Elms in 2020 to create a new work for dance, The Age of Spiritual Machines, with choreographer Alexander Whitley. [41]
Elms recorded, produced and mixed the "distressingly brutal" [42] debut album What is Imposed Must be Endured by doom metal band Blind Monarch. [43] [44] Elms wrote additional music for the 2017 TV series Taboo [45] [46] by Ridley Scott and Thomas Hardy; the show and its lead composer, Max Richter, were nominated for an Emmy Award for Original Dramatic Score in 2017. [47] Elms has also worked with Max Richter [48] on the film Never Look Away , [49] [50] Promise at Dawn, [51] and the HBO adaptation of Eleanor Ferrante's My Brilliant Friend. PRS for Music Limited is a British music copyright collective, made up of two collection societies: the Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society (MCPS) and the Performing Right Society (PRS). It undertakes collective rights management for musical works on behalf of its 175,000 members. PRS for Music was formed in 1997 following the MCPS-PRS Alliance. In 2009, PRS and MCPS-PRS Alliance realigned their brands and became PRS for Music.
Colin Matthews, OBE is an English composer of contemporary classical music. Noted for his large-scale orchestral compositions, Matthews is also a prolific arranger of other composer's music, including works by Berlioz, Britten, Dowland, Mahler, Purcell and Schubert. Other arrangements include orchestrations of all Debussy's 24 Préludes, both books of Debussy's Images, and two movements—Oiseaux tristes and La vallée des cloches—from Ravel's Miroirs. Having received a doctorate from University of Sussex on the works of Mahler, from 1964–1975 Matthews worked with his brother David Matthews and musicologist Deryck Cooke on completing a performance version of Mahler's Tenth Symphony.
Nitin Sawhney is a British musician, producer and composer. A recipient of the Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement award in 2017, among multiple international awards throughout his career. Sawhney's work combines Asian and other worldwide influences with elements of electronica and often explores themes such as multiculturalism, politics, and spirituality. Sawhney is also active in the promotion of arts and cultural matters, is chair of the PRS Foundation, sits on the board of trustees of theatre company Complicité, and is a patron of numerous film festivals, venues, and educational institutions. In 2021, he was an ambassador for the Royal Albert Hall.
Tarik Hamilton O'Regan is a British and American composer. His compositions are partially represented on numerous recordings which have been recognised with two Grammy nominations. He is also the recipient of two British Composer Awards. O'Regan has served on the Faculties of Columbia University as a Fulbright Chester Schirmer Fellow, The Radcliffe Institute of Harvard University as a Radcliffe Fellow, Yale University, Trinity College in the University of Cambridge, Rutgers University, Stanford University as a Visiting Artist, and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton as Director's Visitor.
