Daniel Kalla

Daniel Kalla is a Canadian author and physician. He has written several popular novels in the thriller and historical fiction genres, all with medical themes. He was the director of Emergency Medicine at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia. [1]

Both Kalla's father and grandfather were also practicing physicians; his grandfather fled Czechoslovakia weeks prior to the Nazi annexation of that country in 1939. [2] Kalla was born in Vancouver on May 4, 1966. [3] He attended the University of British Columbia, where he studied math as an undergraduate, and received his M.D. [2] He also took a screenwriting course at Simon Fraser University, which encouraged his writing ambitions. His first novel, Pandemic, was inspired by his experiences screening potential SARS patients in Vancouver during the 2003 outbreak. [1] He went on to head the Emergency Medicine departments at two Vancouver hospitals. He is an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of British Columbia. [2] As of 2016, he has published nine novels with two publishers, Tor and HarperCollins. He has used a recurring character, Dr. Franz Adler, in three of his novels.

Williams was a mission specialist on two Space Shuttle missions. His first spaceflight, STS-90 in 1998, was a 16-day mission aboard Space Shuttle Columbia dedicated to neuroscience research. His second flight, STS-118 in August 2007, was flown by Space Shuttle Endeavour to the International Space Station. During that mission he performed three spacewalks, becoming the third Canadian to perform a spacewalk and setting a Canadian record for total number of spacewalks. These spacewalks combined for a total duration of 17 hours and 47 minutes.

William H. Welch American physician and scientist

William Henry Welch was an American physician, pathologist, bacteriologist, and medical school administrator. He was one of the "Big Four" founding professors at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was the first dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and was also the founder of the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, the first school of public health in the country. Welch was more known for his cogent summations of current scientific work, than his own scientific research. The Johns Hopkins medical school library is also named after Welch. In his lifetime, he was called the "Dean of American Medicine" and received various awards and honors throughout his lifetime, and posthumously.
