Daniel M. Hirsch (born 1959 in Washington DC) is retired Senior Foreign Service Officer, currently a manager of the Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Fund of the U.S. Department of State. From July 2009 to July 2013 he served as State Vice President of the American Foreign Service Association(). In that role, he was the primary labor-management negotiator representing roughly 12,000 State Department members of the American Foreign Service and was the senior vice president of the professional association representing the entire American Foreign Service.
Born into a Foreign Service family, Hirsch has been associated with the Foreign Service for over 50 years, spending his childhood in Asia, Africa and Washington DC, and studying at the University of Maryland, College Park, before entering the Service himself in 1985. He served in 11 overseas postings, including Mali, Cape Verde, Mozambique, Guinea Bissau, Uzbekistan, [1] Nigeria, [2] India, Kyrgyzstan, Serbia, Turkmenistan and Tunisia, where he helped open, close and move embassies and established new employee associations, schools and medical clinics. He also served as a reporting officer at the United States Mission to the United Nations (USUN), as the Senior Regional Management Advisor to the State Department's Bureaus of Near Eastern and South and Central Asian Affairs, as a senior advisor to the Executive Director of the State Department's Bureaus of Educational and Cultural Affairs and International Informational Programs, as a special advisor to the Director of Overseas Employment of the State Department's Bureau of Human Resources, and as Director of the Department's Overseas Motor Vehicle Program, overseeing the entire overseas motor vehicle fleet of the Department of State. He has received over a dozen individual awards for performance, including the State Department's Meritorious and Superior Honor Awards and a 2002 Department-wide award for excellence in logistics management. At three overseas posts, he served as Post Security Officer, and at eleven he served on the Emergency Action Committee.
Active in AFSA since 1985, he has served as an AFSA post representative, as a member of AFSA's State Standing Committee and as a contributor to the Foreign Service Journal. [3] As a member of the Department of State's mentoring program, he mentored eight current Foreign Service Officers.

American Foreign Service Association (AFSA), established in 1924, is the professional association of the United States Foreign Service. With over 15,000 due-paying members, AFSA represents 28,000 active and retired Foreign Service employees of the Department of State and Agency for International Development (AID), as well as smaller groups in the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), Foreign Commercial Service (FCS), and International Broadcasting Bureau (IBB).
The Foreign Service Institute (FSI) is the United States federal government's primary training institution for members of the U.S. foreign service community, preparing American diplomats as well as other professionals to advance U.S. foreign policy objectives overseas and in Washington. FSI provides more than 800 courses—including up to 70 foreign languages—to more than 225,000 enrollees a year from the U.S. Department of State and more than 50 other government agencies and the military service branches. FSI is based at the George P. Shultz National Foreign Affairs Training Center in Arlington, Virginia.
Assistant Secretary of State (A/S) is a title used for many executive positions in the United States Department of State, ranking below the under secretaries. A set of six assistant secretaries reporting to the under secretary for political affairs manage diplomatic missions within their designated geographic regions, plus one assistant secretary dealing with international organizations and one equivalent as the coordinator/ambassador at large for counterterrorism. Assistant secretaries usually manage individual bureaus of the Department of State. When the manager of a bureau or another agency holds a title other than assistant secretary, such as "director", it can be said to be of "assistant secretary equivalent rank". Assistant secretaries typically have a set of deputies, referred to as deputy assistant secretaries (DAS).

Joseph H. Melrose Jr. was an American diplomat who served as United States Ambassador to Sierra Leone during the final years of the Sierra Leone Civil War. He helped broker the Lomé Peace Accord which brought an end to hostilities, and he worked to expose the role of blood diamonds in financing armed conflict in Africa.
Nancy Eileen McEldowney is an American academic and diplomat who served as the national security advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris from January 20, 2021, to March 21, 2022. She was previously a career Foreign Service officer, served as United States ambassador to Bulgaria (2008–2009), and was director of the Foreign Service Institute from February 2013 until June 2017.
Alan Philip Larson is a diplomat and a former United States Ambassador to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in 1990–93. From 1996 to 1999, he served as U.S. Department of State Assistant Secretary for Economic and Business Affairs. In 1999 to 2005, he also served as US Undersecretary of State for Economic, Business, and Agricultural Affairs, OECD. He is a United States Career Ambassador, and a recipient of the Secretary of State’s Distinguished Service Award.
Earl Anthony Wayne is an American diplomat. Formerly Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs, Ambassador to Argentina and Deputy Ambassador to Afghanistan, Wayne served nearly four years as Ambassador to Mexico. He was nominated by President Obama and confirmed by the Senate in August, 2011. He departed Mexico City for Washington July 31, 2015 and retired from the State Department on September 30, 2015. Wayne attained the highest rank in the U.S. diplomatic service: Career Ambassador. He is currently a Professorial Lecturer and Distinguished Diplomat in Residence at American University's School of International Service where he teaches courses related to diplomacy and US foreign policy. Wayne also works with the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the Atlantic Council, the Center for Strategic and International Studies,. Wayne is co-chair of the Mexico Institute's Advisory Board at the Wilson Center. He is also on the board of the American Academy of Diplomacy and the Public Diplomacy Council of America. Wayne is an independent consultant, speaker and writer and works with several not-for-profit professional associations. He was an adviser for HSBC Latin America on improving management of financial crime risk from 2015 until 2019 and served on the board of the American Foreign Service Association from 2017 to 2019.
