Krzysztof Eugeniusz Penderecki was a Polish composer and conductor. Among his best known works are Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima, Symphony No. 3, his St. Luke Passion, Polish Requiem, Anaklasis and Utrenja. Penderecki composed four operas, eight symphonies and other orchestral pieces, a variety of instrumental concertos, choral settings of mainly religious texts, as well as chamber and instrumental works.

The University of Southern Maine (USM) is a public university with campuses in Portland, Gorham and Lewiston in the U.S. state of Maine. It is the southernmost of the University of Maine System. It was founded as two separate state universities, Gorham Normal School and University of Maine at Portland. The two universities were combined in 1970 to help streamline the public university system in Maine and eventually expanded by adding the Lewiston campus in 1988.

Leigh Ingalls Saufley is the Dean of the University of Maine School of Law and former Chief Justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. When she was appointed Chief Justice in 2001, she was both Maine's first woman and the youngest person ever to serve in the position. Saufley grew up in South Portland, Maine and attended the University of Maine and the University of Maine School of Law. She was first appointed to the Maine District Court in 1990, to the Supreme Judicial Court in 1997, and sworn in as Chief Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court on December 6, 2001. She served as Chief Justice until 2020 when she was hired as the eighth Dean of the University of Maine School of Law.
The American Opera Project (AOP) is a professional opera company based in Brooklyn, New York City, and is a member of Opera America, the Fort Greene Association, the Downtown Brooklyn Arts Alliance, and the Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York (A.R.T./NY). The company's primary mission is to develop and present new operatic and music theatre works and has gained a reputation for the "rarefied range" of the projects it fosters. AOP was founded in 1988 by Grethe Barrett Holby who served as Artistic Director of AOP from 1988 until 2001, at which point Charles Jarden became the company's Executive Director and Steven Osgood the company's Artistic Director. Steven Osgood left the post of Artistic Director in 2008 to pursue conducting full-time but remains the Artistic Director for AOP's "Composers & the Voice" program.
Gerald E. Talbot is a civil rights leader, author, and politician from Portland, Maine. Talbot was the first Black legislator to serve in the state of Maine, the founding president of the Portland, Maine chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and was president of the Maine State Board of Education under Governor Joseph Brennan. In 2020, the Riverton elementary school in Portland was renamed the Gerald E. Talbot Community School.
Huw Edwards is a Welsh conductor. Edwards' conducting career began at age seventeen when he became music director of the Maidstone Opera Company in England. He later attended the University of Surrey, where he conducted the college orchestra along with an ensemble that he formed himself. At age twenty-three, he won a conducting competition which sent him to Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He then held a lecturer position at Northwestern University in Chicago, where he was also a doctoral candidate. Edwards was conductor and music director of the Portland Youth Philharmonic from 1995 to 2002 followed by the Seattle Youth Symphony from 2002 to 2005. He served as music director of the Portland Columbia Symphony from 2000 to 2012 and with the Olympia Symphony Orchestra from 2003 to 2020.
Aaron Robinson is an American composer, conductor, and musicologist. He is the author of Does God Sing? – A Musical Journey. He created the musical work Black Nativity – In Concert: A Gospel Celebration. He also served as conductor and musical director in the PBS documentary On This Island. In 2013, he was nominated for an Emmy Award for composing Maine Public Broadcasting Network's Maine Arts series theme music.
Eloise A. Vitelli is the majority leader of the Maine Senate. She is a Democrat representing Senate District 23, which serves all of Sagadahoc County and the adjacent town of Dresden, Maine in Lincoln County. Vitelli was first elected to the Maine Senate in a 2013 special election, but lost her re-election bid in 2014. She was re-elected in 2016, 2018 and 2020. Vitelli began working as an entrepreneurship trainer in the early 1980s and was the director of program and policy for New Ventures Maine for 38 years. She became the Assistant Senate Majority Leader in December of 2020, and Majority Leader in February of 2021.
John Thomas Holiday Jr. is an American operatic countertenor. His repertoire focuses on the Baroque and contemporary composers, including staged opera and opera in concert, works for voice and orchestra, and experimental mixed-media. He has participated in several world premieres. He has performed with several opera companies in the United States, toured with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and sung in Shanghai and several European cities. He also sings gospel and jazz; he was a contestant on season 19 of NBC's The Voice, a vocal competition television series.
The Summer King is a 2017 opera in two acts by American composer Daniel Sonenberg, with a libretto by poet Daniel Nester and Sonenberg, and additional lyrics by Mark Campbell. Its story follows the life of baseball legend Josh Gibson, from his early days on Pittsburgh's North Side to the Negro leagues, and finally achieving immortality as the second Negro league player to be inducted in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The Summer King had its world premiere at Pittsburgh Opera in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on April 29, 2017.
Rachel Talbot Ross is an American politician and activist. A Democrat from Portland, Talbot serves as the assistant Majority Leader of the Maine House of Representatives. When she was first elected in 2016, Talbot Ross was the first Black woman to serve in the Maine Legislature and the first Black legislative leader in Maine history. Talbot Ross represents District 40, consisting of the Parkside, Bayside, East Bayside, and Oakdale neighborhoods of Portland as well as the University of Southern Maine campus.
