Danny Darnell Carr [1] (born 1970) is the District Attorney of Jefferson County,Alabama,serving since November 27,2018. Carr previously served as the county's interim district attorney in 2017. He is the first African-American District Attorney in the Birmingham division of the Jefferson County,Alabama District Attorney’s office.
Carr was born in the Ensley neighborhood of Birmingham,Alabama. He was raised by a single mother,Regina Carr-Hope,who worked as a probation officer and later the Principal of Wenonah High School. [2] Carr graduated from Jackson-Olin High School,then attended Alabama State University on a basketball scholarship. He graduated from Miles Law School.
In 2016,attorney Charles Todd Henderson was elected as a Democrat to be the next Jefferson County District Attorney. Henderson was then indicted on felony perjury,leading to Carr’s appointment as interim District Attorney. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey later appointed Michael Anderton,a Republican prosecutor in the district attorney's office,as the next Jefferson County District Attorney. [3] Local activists previously petitioned the Governor to not remove Carr,a Democrat,from the seat. [4]
A career Jefferson County prosecutor and criminal justice reformer,Carr was the victorious Democratic nominee for Jefferson County District Attorney in the November 6,2018 general election,defeating Anderton. [5] [6] Carr took office on November 27,2018.
In May 2024,Carr filed a public report calling for a new trial for death row prisoner Toforest Johnson,a man his office successfully prosecuted in 1998. Carr's report detailed the reasons why his office had concluded that "the evidence in this case has unraveled over 20 years.”Carr wrote that "it has not been possible,until recently,to fully appreciate the full extent to which the foundation of this conviction has disintegrated." [7] Carr was joined in his call for a new trial by Jeff Wallace,the prosecutor who obtained Johnson's conviction and death sentence in 1998. [8] Kim Kardashian and many others have also spoken out in support of Johnson's quest for a new trial. [9] [10]

The 2014 Alabama gubernatorial election took place on November 4,2014,to elect the governor of Alabama. Incumbent Governor Robert J. Bentley won a second term over Democrat Parker Griffith. This was the first Alabama gubernatorial race where either Choctaw and/or Conecuh counties voted Republican. This alongside the concurrent Senate race is the last time Jefferson County voted Republican in any statewide election. Bentley did not complete this term;he resigned in April 2017 due to a scandal and was succeeded by fellow Republican Kay Ivey.
Anthony Ray Hinton is an American activist,writer,and author who was wrongly convicted of the 1985 murders of two fast food restaurant managers in Birmingham,Alabama. Hinton was sentenced to death and held on the state's death row for 28 years before his 2015 release.

On August 20,2016,a mass killing occurred in Citronelle,Alabama,United States,resulting in the deaths of five people,including a woman who was five months pregnant. They were killed in the early morning in a private residence in a rural area west of the city. It was owned by a brother of Laneta Lester,who had sought refuge there. She and her brother's infant were abducted and taken to Leakesville,Mississippi,by her estranged boyfriend,Derrick Dearman. He released her that day. Lester returned with the infant to Citronelle. She notified police of the killings. Investigators described this mass killing as the worst in Mobile County's history. The house burned down a couple of weeks after the crime.

On March 6,1998,68-year-old contract courier William Clinton Clayton Jr. was shot to death by an unknown person while he was taking money out of an ATM in downtown Centre,Alabama. The killer was later identified as Keith Edmund Gavin,a resident of Chicago who was out on parole after serving 16 years of a 34-year jail term for a 1982 murder case in his native state of Illinois. Gavin was convicted of the murder and sentenced to death in 1999,and he was incarcerated on death row for about 25 years before he was executed via lethal injection on July 18,2024.

Cochran was sentenced to death and held on the state's death row for 19 years before finally being released in 1997. Cochran is also notable for appearances in media such as “Death in Dixie”as well as numerous interviews with well-known attorney Richard S. Jaffe,who was a part of the team that freed Cochran. This team also included another well-known lawyer in Kenneth Frazier.
