Danny van Dongen (born 1983) is a Dutch racing driver and entrepreneur currently competing in the MW-V6 Pickup Series.

Racing career

Van Dongen started his racing career in the Dutch Citroën Saxo Cup. He scored a third-place finish in the championship in 2000. The following year he graduated to the Renault Clio Cup finishing seventh. He also raced in the Dutch Formula Arcobaleno and the German Formula König. In 2002 he graduated into GT racing, racing a Marcos Mantis for semi-works team Eurotech. Van Dongen competed in the Dutch Supercar Challenge and the Euro GT Series. He also raced in the Spanish GT Championship for the Marcos works team in a Marcos LM600. [1]

In 2006 the Dutch driver returned to his native country racing in the BRL V6 silhouette racing series. He achieved several podium finishes in 2006 and 2007. Van Dongen founded the Dutch Race Driver Academy a racing school for aspiring racing drivers. He also continued racing a Chevrolet Corvette C6 in the Dutch Supercar Challenge. The following year he raced the same car in the Dutch GT4 Championship. In 2009 and 2010 he scored a total of three wins in the championship driving a Corvette. The following year Van Dongen founded the Dutch Racing Driver Organisation. The organisation sanctions auto races in three different classes: BMW M3, Diesel and Specials. In 2011 he graduated from the Johan Cruijff Academy. [2] In the same year he was also a full-time racedriver in the ADAC GT Masters and Dutch Supercar Challenge. Van Dongen won two races, racing an Audi R8 LMS, in the Dutch Supercar Challenge GT class. In 2012 Danny van Dongen was contracted by Praga as a factory driver for the new Praga R1. He raced a limited schedule in the R1 predecessor the Praga R4S. At one of the few ovals in the Netherlands, Raceway Venray, he raced in the BRL V6 series scoring two wins and a second place in the championship. In 2013 he won the Dutch Supercar Challenge Superlights championship in the Praga R1 class. In 2014 Van Dongen returned to international racing in the Acceleration 2014 MW-V6 Pickup Series.

Acceleration 2014 was a multi-day festival combining top class car and bike racing with live music and other entertainment. The festival was organised by the International Sport Racing Association (ISRA), based in the Netherlands, and was held six times in 2014, starting 25–27 April in Portimao, Portugal and ending 17–19 October in Assen, Netherlands. The various racing competitions were Formula Acceleration 1 (FA1), the MW-V6 Pickup Series, the Legend SuperCup (LSC), the European Stock 1000 Series and the European Stock 600 Series. Competing drivers in one or more classes each drove a vehicle representing his or her country of origin.

The 2014 Formula Acceleration 1 season was a formula racing series that started over 25–27 April in Portimao, Portugal and ended over 17–19 October at the TT Circuit Assen, Netherlands. The series featured 12 teams that represented the nations in which they were founded. Their drivers did not have that nationality per sé, but the car represented the flag. This concept was similar to the one used in the former A1 Grand Prix series, whose vehicles were used in FA1. To attract young, yet serious, racing drivers, the 2014 winning driver/team was promised the full budget for the 2015 FA1 season and a test day in a GP2 Series car in Abu Dhabi.

Dennis Retera is a Dutch racing driver currently competing in the International GT Open. Retera has raced in the International Formula Master, Formula Renault 2.0 and other racing series. In 2008 Retera joined A1 Team Netherlands as a test driver.

A special feature is that touring cars, GTs and Sportscars can all participate on an equal basis within the same class, enabled by very open regulations. The championship was first held in 2001, after replacing the Supercar Cup. From 2001 to 2011 the championship was called the Dutch Supercar Challenge, but due to interest from drivers, teams and tracks outside the Netherlands the organisers decided to drop 'Dutch' from its name on 11 February 2012.

The 2017 GT & Prototype Challenge was the 1st season of the GT & Prototype Challenge. The Super GT and Superlights classes of the Supercar Challenge were split from the original series to form the new championship.
