Dardan Selimaj

Dardan Selimaj (born 1984 in Prishtina, Kosovo) is a journalist, producer and music theorist. He started his career as a journalist by writing for magazines and hosting a live show on local radio station in Prishtina. Since 2005 he has hosted a daily TV show at Kohavision (KTV), one of the three national broadcasters in Kosovo. He has also produced over 300 TV shows.

Selimaj is well known in Kosovo as an event manager too. He founded the International Festival of Young Musicians DAM in 2006 together with Yllka Rexhepi and is the head of the festival in addition to organizing concerts in Kosovo. In 2006 and 2007 he managed the Prishtina Jazz Festival while he was also for two years a board member of Re Musica Contemporary Music Festival in Prishtina.

He has been a member of the choir of the Kosovo Philharmonic since 2003 and has performed with the choir in Croatia, Albania, and North Macedonia. He is now manager of the Kosovo Philharmonic. Lately Selimaj is experiencing a new ventures in documentary film. In 2014, his first documentary 'There is light inside' (co directed with Rea Surroi) was premiered at Dokufest, Prizren (RKS) and till now it has been screened in several events and festivals in New York, Florence, Bratislava and Leipzig. Classical music in Kosovo refers to the art music cultivated in Kosovo. The roots of classical music in Kosovo are found in the 1940s and include the time period from the times when Kosovo was part of Yugoslavia to this day. It can be said that there is a tradition of classical music in Kosovo, however, compared to other Balkan countries and especially European countries this tradition is younger. Classical music in Kosovo reaches back about 70 years. Even though in a short period of time, this music has evolved, passing through generations of composers and artists. In his book Albanian: Zhvillimi i stileve në veprat e kompozitorëve shqiptarë të Kosovës, Engjëll Berisha comments:

"The diversity of styles in Albanian music [of Kosovo], its national patterns with sound idea-aesthetic foundations are a characteristic of the European musical reality, so many many works are of interest abroad, too, because during this relatively short period Albanian classical music in Kosovo has compensated for the delay in its development."

Mass media in Kosovo

The mass media in Kosovo consists of different kinds of communicative media such as radio, television, newspapers, and internet web sites. Most of the media survive from advertising and subscriptions.

Cinematography in Kosovo in the Albanian language began its activities after the foundation of Kosovafilm, which produced short films, documentaries, cartoons and later feature films. Since 2008, the central authority for cinematography in Kosovo is Kosova’s Cinematography Center (KCC) though there are numerous independent film companies active in Kosovo. Before Kosovafilm, there were no fully Kosovan films.

Kent Television

Kent Television (KTV) is the student-led television society at the University of Kent, Canterbury and is a media division of the University's student union, Kent Union. KTV was founded in May 2012 and within its first year has gone on to win 3 awards at NaSTA 2013, worked with the SU and the university to gain a new Student Media Centre on the university campus and hit over 125,000 views on its YouTube Channel. Currently the channel has 250,000 views and over 700 subscribers, along with an additional 2 more awards at NaSTA 2015.

The National Theatre is the only public theatre in Kosovo and therefore it is financed by Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport. This theatre has produced more than 400 premieres which have been watched by more than 3 million spectators.
