Darren Johnson (born 18 September 1965) is an English professional darts player who currently competes in Professional Darts Corporation events. His most significant result came in 2017 where he was the runner-up in the 2017 PDPA Players Championship Barnsley, defeating Dave Chisnall, Raymond van Barneveld, Benito van de Pas and Michael van Gerwen before falling to Simon Whitlock in the final. [2]
Johnson entered to Professional Darts Corporation in 2004. A year later, he made his debut at the 2005 UK Open and immediately reached to Third round. He repeated this result in the next two years and added his first quarter-finals on the PDC Pro Tour in 2006. At the 2007 German Darts Championship, Johnson advanced to Third round, where he lost to Phil Taylor. In 2008, he took part in the 2008 UK Open again, but here he was already in the Second round. In 2009, Johnson shone with a quarter-finals and two Last 16 phase on the PDC Pro Tour and again reached the Third round at the 2009 UK Open.
He then got his PDC Tour Card in 2013. The rest of the year included four participations on the PDC European Tour. In 2014, Johnson missed qualifying for the UK Open for the first time in nine years. In 2015, he regained PDC Tour Card and in April, Johnson achieved his first nine-dart finish at a Professional Darts Corporation tournament. He also qualified for the PDC European Tour two more times and made it to the second round. In 2017, he regained his PDC Tour Card for the third time. Two months later, he played in the final of a Players Championship event.
Shortly afterwards, he was in the third round at the 2017 German Darts Championship, where he lost to Ian White. At the 2017 Gibraltar Darts Trophy he advanced to the quarter-finals, where he lost to Peter Wright. These successes enabled him to qualify for the 2017 Players Championship Finals for the first time, where he lost to John Henderson in First round match. [3] In 2018, he was no longer able to repeat the successes of the previous year. At the 2018 UK Open he already failed at the First round. In total, he qualified for four more PDC European Tour events, including the 2018 Dutch Darts Championship, where he reached Third round after successes over Kevin Münch and Gerwyn Price, then he lost to Simon Whitlock. [4] [5] At the end of the year, he lost his PDC Tour Card.
As a result, for the first time he was mainly found on the PDC Challenge Tour, and he also appeared on the World Darts Federation circuit for the first time, reaching final stage at the Isle Of Man Classic. [6] In 2022, he reached the final at the Denmark Open, which he lost to Sebastian Białecki. He also won an event on the World Seniors Darts Tour and the Northern Ireland Open. [7] He qualified for the 2023 World Seniors Darts Championship. [8] He beat Larry Butler in the First round, but lost to Phil Taylor in the second round. [9] At the 2023 WDF World Darts Championship he lost to Dennie Olde Kalter in the second round. [10] [11]
Johnson is provisionally qualified for 2024 WDF World Darts Championship. [12]
