Dave's Killer Bread is an American brand of organic whole-grain products. [1] The company is also well known for "Second Chance Employment", an initiative which increases employment opportunities for people who have criminal backgrounds.

History

The brand was founded in 2005 [2] in Milwaukie, Oregon by Dave Dahl; he learned the baking trade while growing up working in his family's bakery. The company expanded from 30 employees to more than 190 by 2010 and to 280 at the end of 2012. [3] The company had twenty-five percent growth in increased retail sales in 2015 and has continued to grow since. [4]

The brand specializes in breads made with seeds and whole grains, including spelt and sprouted wheat; it is free of animal products and chemical additives. [5] The products offer high nutritional value with ingredients packed with Omega-3s, fiber, seeds, and other organic ingredients including amaranth, barley, spelt, blue cornmeal, and pumpkin seeds. The labels say that each slice contains on average of four to five grams of proteins. [6] Dave's Killer Bread is sold and distributed in the United States and Canada. Each product is USDA-certified organic and Non-GMO Project Verified. [7] Flowers Foods bought the brand in 2015 for $275 million. [8] Dahl reportedly received $33 million in the sale to Flowers Foods in 2015. With Flowers Foods the brand has become the largest organic bread company in North America. Prior to the sale, Dave's Killer Bread was in 8,000 stores, but since the sale in 2015 is now in over 20,000. [9]

Dave's Killer Bread is marketed in 23 varieties and is the most popular organic sliced bread in the US. [6] [10] Loaves are sold in the classic "Killer Bread" and "Thin-Sliced" options. [11] Besides the signature organic whole grain loaves, It sells breakfast breads, English muffins, bagels, buns, and organic snack bars. [10] The company has "Snack Bites" which are sold in the baked and crunchy variety; there are 6 unique flavor options. [11]
