David Morgan MBE (born 30 September 1964) is a Welsh weightlifter. [1]
Morgan won the British under-16 championship in 1979. He became the youngest ever Commonwealth Games weightlifting champion in 1982 at Brisbane, at 17 years of age. Competing in the lightweight class (67.5 kg), he achieved 132.5 kg in the snatch and 162.5 kg in the clean and jerk to defeat former champion Basil (Bill) Stellios of Australia. Morgan is the only competitor to win medals in six different Commonwealth Games, with victories in 1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998, and 2002. He won two gold and one silver medals in 2002 at Manchester (with 145 kg in the snatch and 160 in the clean and jerk), [2] bringing his career medal total to twelve (nine gold, three silver).
Morgan recorded his best attempt in the snatch at the 1984 Junior World Championships, with a lift of 150 kg which gave him the gold in the snatch in the 75 kg class. He then went on to finish second overall after a clean and jerk of 180k. This was the first time in 27 years that a British weightlifter has won a gold medal in a world championship.
Morgan placed fourth in the 1984 Summer Olympics. At the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Morgan competed in the 82.5 kg class and finished fourth again with a total of 365 kg. David Morgan is also the only person in history to have won overall gold in 5 commonwealth games. [3]
He worked for 10 years as a commentator for Eurosport, appeared on the BBC show "They Think It's All Over" with Jonathan Ross and David Gower. For charity, he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro and took part in Comic Relief in 2004. Morgan was inducted into the Welsh Sports Hall Of Fame in 2013. In his private life, he married his wife Rosalind in 2010. [4]

He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2020 New Year Honours for services to weightlifting. [6]
He is still working as a private trainer in Cambridge and advocates weight training for people of all ages to improve their health and slow down aging. [7]
Halil Mutlu is a former professional Turkish weightlifter with several World and Olympic championship titles. Mutlu is one of the five weightlifters who has achieved three consecutive gold medals at the Olympic Games. His weightlifting career includes five World championships, nine European championships and more than 20 world records at 52 kg (115 lb), 54 kg (119 lb) and 56 kg (123 lb) combined.
Zhang Guozheng is a Chinese weightlifter. Zhang is a World champion, Olympic champion and World Record holder. In January, 1999, Zhang Guozheng was named a member of the National Men's weightlifting team. He ranked fourth at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000 in the 69 kg class. On October 3, 2002, at the Busan Asian Games, Zhang Guozheng took gold in the 69 kg class with a total score of 345 kilograms. In 2004, Zhang Guozeng won the Athens Olympic Games in the 69 kg class champion. On December 3, 2006, at the 15th Asian Games, Zhang Guozheng totaled 336 kg for a gold medal with a 152 kg snatch and a 184 kg clean and jerk. Zhang retired after 2008 and now serves as the deputy head coach for the men's weightlifting team.
Michaela Alica Breeze is a British former weightlifter. Breeze was born in Watford and raised in Cornwall and educated at Wadebridge School. She started weightlifting under the guidance of PE teacher Dave Allen. Breeze then went on to Bodmin Community College before attending the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff. Breeze is well known for commentating at various events including Rio Olympics and Tokyo Olympics.
Ilya Aleksandrovich Ilyin is a retired Kazakhstani weightlifter who won four world championships. On 12 December, 2015 at the President's Cup in Grozny, Russia, Ilyin set two world records in the −105 kg class. He lifted 246 kg in the clean and jerk and 437 kg in the total. Ilyin was named IWF World Weightlifter of the Year four times: in 2005, 2006, 2014, and 2015.
Yukio Stinson Peter is a weightlifter from Nauru.
Christine Girard is a Canadian weightlifter from Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec. She competes in the 63 kg division. Girard was the first Canadian female to win a medal in weightlifting when she won gold at the 2012 London Olympics. She also won Commonwealth Games and Pan American Games titles in her weight class and has won multiple medals in each of those competitions. She holds the Commonwealth games record and the Pan-American Games record in the Clean and Jerk.
Lü Xiaojun is a Chinese weightlifter. He is a three-time Olympic champion and five-time world champion competing in the 77 kg category until 2018 and 81 kg starting in 2018 after the International Weightlifting Federation reorganized the categories. He is widely considered as one of the greatest weightlifters of all time.
Seen Lee is an Australian weightlifter. She won a bronze medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and a silver at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. She represented Australia in weightlifting at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Jack Simon Oliver is a weightlifter competing in the 77 kg category, representing England and Great Britain.
Gareth Irfon Evans is a Welsh weightlifter. He has competed in the 62 kg and 69 kg weight categories, and was selected to represent Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics.
Manueli Tulo is a Fijian weightlifter who competed for Fiji at the 2012 Summer Olympics and at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Both times he competed in the Men's 56kg event, finishing 13th both times. His wife Maria Liku also represented Fiji in weightlifting at the 2012 Summer Olympics, while his younger sister, Seruwaia Malani, competed at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Kuo Hsing-chun is a Taiwanese Amis weightlifter, Olympic gold medalist, five time world champion, two time Universiade champion, Asian Games champion, and five time Asian champion, competing in the 58 kg division until 2018 and 59 kg starting in 2018 after the International Weightlifting Federation reorganized the categories. She has set 11 senior world records in her career.
Fernando Saraiva Reis is a Brazilian weightlifter. He competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2016 Rio Games, finishing 11th and 5th, respectively. He won a bronze medal in the 2018 World Championships and is a three-time Pan American Games champion.
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu is an Indian weightlifter, supported by OGQ. Mirabai Chanu lifted a total of 201 kg, winning the gold medal at the CWG 2022. She won the silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the Women's 49 kg category. Mirabai Chanu has won the World Championships and multiple medals at the Commonwealth Games. She was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India for her contributions to the sport. She was awarded the sporting honour Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna by the Government of India in 2018.
Shi Zhiyong is a Chinese weightlifter, two time Olympic Champion, three time World Champion and four time Asian Champion competing in the 69 kg category until 2018 and 73 kg starting in 2018 after the International Weightlifting Federation reorganized the categories.

Maude G. Charron is a Canadian weightlifter, who competes in the 63/64 kg category and represents Canada at international competitions. She is an Olympic and Commonwealth Games champion in the women's 64 kg division. Charron also owns the clean & jerk Commonwealth Games record, the snatch and total Canadian weightlifting records, all the Panamerican records in her weight class.
Talha Talib is a Pakistani weightlifter from Gujranwala. He is the Pakistani national champion in the 62 kg category. He set a new record at the games in snatch as he lifted 132 kg in the third attempt with 127 kg and 130 kg in the first two attempts, respectively. He was also a gold medalist at the 2016 Commonwealth Youth Weightlifting Championships in Penang. He lifted 258 kg to clinch the gold. He is currently the top No. 1 ranked weightlifter of Pakistan.
Akbar Djuraev is an Uzbekistani weightlifter, Olympic Champion and Junior World Champion. He won the gold medal in the men's 109 kg event at the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan. He also won the gold medal in the men's 109 kg event at the 2021 World Weightlifting Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Maximina Uepa is a weightlifter from Nauru. She won the bronze medal in the women's 76 kg event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, England. She is the current Nauruan women's record-holder in the 71kg category for overall, snatch and clean and jerk.
