Dave Steckel is an American football coach and former player. He was recently the head coach at Missouri State University. Prior to that, he spent 14 seasons on the staff at the University of Missouri. His other coaching stops include Miami University of Ohio, Ball State University, the University of Minnesota, Dickinson College, Lehigh University, the University of Toledo, and Rutgers University.

Coaching career

Steckel's coaching career started shortly after his playing career ended at Kutztown in 1982. He got his start as a graduate assistant at Miami (OH). [1]

In 1984, he joined the Ball State staff as the defensive line coach. [1]

Steckel spent the 1985 season as a graduate assistant at Minnesota. [1]

From 1986 to 1987, Steckel was the associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Dickinson College. [1]

From Dickinson, Steckel moved on to Lehigh, where he served as the special teams coordinator and linebackers coach from 1988 to 1991. [2]

In 1992, Steckel joined Gary Pinkel’s staff at Toledo coaching the defensive line. He held that position through the 1995 season. [2]

Steckel then joined the coaching staff at Rutgers for five seasons. He coached the defensive line from 1996 to 1998 and the linebackers in 1999 and 2000. [2]

In 2001, Steckel reunited with Gary Pinkel at Missouri, joining the Tigers as the linebackers coach. Steckel would spend the next 14 years tutoring the Tigers linebackers, was promoted to defensive coordinator prior to the 2009 season, and was promoted to associate head coach prior to the 2011 season. On December 14, 2014, Steckel was named the 20th head football coach at Missouri State. [3]

On January 10, 2020, Steckel was bought out of his contract with Missouri State. [4]

Steckle was officially hired by the St. Louis BattleHawks on September 13, 2022. [5] He left the Team on March 2, 2023. [6]

Playing career

Steckel played four seasons as an offensive lineman at Kutztown University. [3]

Personal life

A native of Fullerton, Pennsylvania, Steckel enlisted in the United States Marine Corps following his high school graduation, and served from 1975 to 1978. [3] He is the younger brother of former NFL coach, Les Steckel. [2]

Steckel and his wife, Mary Beth, have one daughter, Amanda. [3]

Pinkel has the most wins of any head coach in the history of the Toledo Rockets football program and led the 1995 team to a Mid-American Conference championship. He won two Super Bowls with the Giants before playing for the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions and New York Jets.

Mike Archer is an American football coach and former player. He is currently the defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Vipers. From 1987 to 1990, Archer was the head football coach at Louisiana State University, where he compiled a record of 27–18–1. James Herrmann is an American football coach and former player. He is currently the defensive coordinator for the San Antonio Brahmas of the XFL and was recently the defensive coordinator for the New York Guardians of the XFL. Prior to that, he was linebackers coach for the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League (NFL) and the Bowling Green Falcons football team. He played college football at the University of Michigan from 1980 to 1982 and served as an assistant football coach at Michigan from 1985 to 2005, including nine years as defensive coordinator from 1997 to 2005. Theodore John Cottrell is an American football coach and former player. Reginald Wayne Herring is an American football coach and former player and most recently the linebackers coach for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL). James Edward Willis III is a former American football linebacker in the National Football League and a former coach in the NCAA and in the NFL. He was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round of the 1993 NFL Draft. He played college football at Auburn. He played high school football at J.O. Johnson High School in Huntsville, Alabama. He was the defensive assistant/linebackers coach for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League until his termination on January 5, 2017.

He was previously the head coach at the University of Wyoming from 2009 to 2013, where he compiled a record of 27 wins and 35 losses (.435). William Sheridan is an American football coach who is currently the linebackers coach for the Arlington Renegades. Sheridan was previously the defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League (NFL). He was also a coach for a number of college teams, including Notre Dame, Army, and Michigan State. From 2005 to 2008 he was the linebackers coach for the NFL's New York Giants. In 2009, he was the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants. He had stints with the Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Detroit Lions before returning to NCAA football at Boston College in 2018. After two years there, he was hired by the Air Force Academy to be their new defensive line coach beginning in 2020.

He served as the interim head football coach at Southern Methodist University (SMU) for the final 10 games of the 2014 season upon the resignation of June Jones, compiling a record of 1–9. Before that, he had been SMU's defensive coordinator since 2008. Mason also served as the interim head football coach at Boise State University for the first ten games of the 1996 season, compiling a record of 1–9.
