David Albert Ames (born 10 August 1983) is an English actor, best known for his portrayal of Dominic Copeland in the medical drama Holby City . In 2023, he joined the cast of the Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks .

Early life and career

David Albert Ames was born on 10 August 1983. [1] [2] Before getting a degree in drama, Ames was involved in plays at college. [3] He appeared in the play The Temperamentals as Rudi Geinrich at Greenwich Theatre. [4] [5] So So Gay called his performance in the play "touching". [6] In 2013, Ames joined the cast of Holby City as Dominic Copeland, where he remained in the role until 2022. [7] [8] [9] [10] [11]

In 2022, Ames starred as Steven in the play Steve, which was performed at the Seven Dials Playhouse. [12] Ames starred as Tim / Butterfly in Horse-Play at the Riverside Studios in London between August and September 2022. [13] [14]

In 2023, Ames appeared in the Channel 5 drama The Madame Blanc Mysteries . He also appeared in an episode of the BBC soap opera Doctors as Marcus Bavidge. [15] In June 2023, he was announced to be joining the cast of the Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks as the headmaster of Hollyoaks High. [16]

Personal life

Ames is openly gay. [17] [18] [19] Prior to becoming an actor, he lived with his family in Hampshire.

Dominic "Dom" Copeland is a fictional character from the BBC medical drama Holby City, played by actor David Ames. He first appeared in the series fifteen episode "Second Life", broadcast on 23 April 2013. Dom arrives at Holby City hospital as an F1 on Keller Ward being mentored by Antoine Malick and later Sacha Levy. The character was originally introduced for several episodes and featured in a storyline with Malick. Producers later decided to reintroduce the character on a permanent basis with Dom returning in January 2014.

Arthur Digby is a fictional character from the BBC medical drama Holby City, played by actor Rob Ostlere. He first appeared in the series fifteen episode "Blood Ties", broadcast on 2 January 2013. Arthur arrives at Holby City hospital to start his first year of the Foundation Programme. To prepare for the role Ostlere visited a hospital and shadowed a registrar and foundation doctors on their rounds. He has been described by Holby City's publicity department as "naïve and socially awkward" plus holding an "encyclopaedic knowledge" on unusual subjects. Ostlere's first days on-set influenced various aspects of Arthur's characterisation such as his "preppy attire", fidgeting with his glasses and his clumsy nature. Arthur is a talented doctor and his skills are awarded the medical prize titled, Junior Doctor of the Year. Arthur's storylines have focused on his career on the hospital's Keller and AAU wards, alongside the various characters that staff them. In his first year on-screen he works closely with mentor Antoine Malick and staff nurse Chantelle Lane. The latter he develops romantic feelings for which are not reciprocated. Their friendship dominates his initial story and together they become victims of a vicious mugging and a car crash which is caused by Arthur.

"Veil of Tears – Part One" is the fiftieth episode of the nineteenth series of the British medical drama television series Holby City. The episode was written by Joe Ainsworth and directed by Jan Bauer, and premiered on BBC One on 19 September 2017. The episode features the wedding of established characters Zosia March and Oliver Valentine, who both work on the show's fictitious Darwin ward. It formed the first of a two-part collective of episodes leading up to Arfwedson's departure from the series. The episode also featured Zosia's father Guy Self ruining her wedding day, getting drunk and falling on a shard of glass. Other characters battle in the operating theatre to save his life. While registrar Dominic Copeland and nurse Ben "Lofty" Chiltern sleep together forming part of their ongoing gay storyline.

The twentieth series of the British medical drama television series Holby City began airing on BBC One in the United Kingdom on 2 January 2018, and concluded on 27 December 2018. The series consists of 52 episodes; a decrease from the previous series. Kate Hall serves as the series producer, while Simon Harper continued his role as the executive producer. Fifteen cast members reprised their roles from the previous series. Four actors departed during the series, including long-standing cast member James Anderson. Catherine Russell reprised her role as Serena Campbell from episode six. Throughout the series, multiple characters returned for guest stints, including Zosia March, Bernie Wolfe and Mo Effanga.

Ben Sherwood (<i>Holby City</i>) Fictional character from Holby City

Ben Sherwood is a fictional character from the BBC medical drama Holby City, played by actor Charlie Condou. He first appears in the series twenty-one episode "Be True, Be Brave, Be Kind", originally broadcast on 19 December 2019. Ben is a locum consultant general surgeon. Condou's casting was announced on 3 September 2019 and he began filming at the show's studios that same month. Condou had been in contact with the show's casting team about a part on the drama for years prior to securing the role and he was offered the part without an audition.

Ange Godard is a fictional character from the BBC medical drama Holby City, played by actress Dawn Steele. She first appeared in the series twenty-one episode "China Crisis", broadcast on 8 January 2019. Ange arrives at Holby City hospital to work as a consultant general surgeon on the Young Adult Unit (YAU), a ward she helps to create. Steele was cast in the role following a meeting with the show's production team. She was "delighted" to join the show's cast and it was soon publicised that Ange would have a number of "explosive" secrets, which would then drive Holby City stories forward. Ange is characterised as "ballsy", "tenacious" and "stubborn". Steele has stated that Ange is portrayed as the most emotional surgeon imaginable. Her empathy for patients is often displayed in scenes, which Steele believed was a result of Ange's past experiences.
