David Burnell Smith was a Republican member of the Arizona House of Representatives,representing Arizona Legislative District 7. [2] He served in the House from January 2005 until January 2006,and again from January 2011 until January 2013. He ran unsuccessfully for re-election in November 2014. Smith died of natural causes at his home in Carefree,Arizona on October 24,2014. [1] [3]
Smith was born in Charleston,West Virginia on April 8,1941. After graduating from Charleston High School,Smith served in the United States Coast Guard from 1959 to 1967. [4] He received his B.A. from the University of Charleston (then known as Morris Harvey College) in 1967,where he was a member and officer in Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. [1] Smith and his wife,Rita,moved to Arizona in 1993. He ran unsuccessfully for the Arizona State Senate in 1998,2000,and 2002. [5]
In 2004 he ran for the Arizona House of Representatives,and was elected to represent District 7. [6] When irregularities were discovered in his campaign finances,the Arizona Citizens’Clean Election Commission recommended that he be removed from office. Smith unsuccessfully fought the removal,and stepped down on January 26,2006. [6] [7] [8]
In 2010 he again ran for the House,and was re-elected. [2] He served from January 2011 through January 2013,but lost his bid for re-election in 2012 when he was beaten in the Republican primary by 32 votes. [1]

The 1912–13 United States Senate elections were held on various dates in various states. They were the last U.S. Senate elections before the ratification of the Seventeenth Amendment in 1913,establishing direct elections for all Senate seats. Senators had been primarily chosen by state legislatures. Senators were elected over a wide range of time throughout 1912 and 1913,and a seat may have been filled months late or remained vacant due to legislative deadlock. Some states elected their senators directly even before passage of Seventeenth Amendment. Oregon pioneered direct election and experimented with different measures over several years until it succeeded in 1907. Soon after,Nebraska followed suit and laid the foundation for other states to adopt measures reflecting the people's will. Gowan Sr. is an American politician who currently serves in the Arizona Senate from January 14,2019,and previously as Speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives for the 2015–2017 legislative session and a Representative for Legislative District 14 from January 14,2013,to January 9,2017. Gowan served consecutively from January 2009 until January 14,2013 in the District 30 seat which redistricted into District 14 in 2012. In 2013,he was elected Majority Leader of the Republican Party in the House of Representatives. In 2015,Gowan was elected to serve as Speaker of the House. On October 5,2015,Gowan announced his candidacy for Arizona's 1st congressional district,but withdrew before the Republican primary.

Laurin Hendrix is a Republican member of the Arizona House of Representatives,representing the 14th legislative district since 2023. Pete Rios was a member of the Arizona House of Representatives and the Arizona Senate,serving two stretches in the Senate and a single term in the House. He first ran,unsuccessfully,for the House in 1980. In 1982 he ran for the State Senate,winning the seat from Arizona's 7th District. He won re-election in 1984,1986,1988,1990,and 1992. He served as the Senate President during the 40th Legislature from 1991 to 1992. In 1994,he did not run for re-election to the Senate,instead choosing to run for the Arizona Secretary of State,a bid for which he was unsuccessful. In 1996 Rios once again ran for the Senate,regaining his seat in District 7. He won election three times,the first two in 1998 and 2000 to District,and then to District 23 in 2002,after re-districting. In 2004,due to Arizona's term limit laws,Rios was unable to run again for the Senate,and chose to run for the House seat from District 23,which he won. He won re-election in 2006. He did not run for re-election in 2008.
John Loredo is a former member of the Arizona House of Representatives from January 1997 until January 2005. Prior to running for the Arizona House,he ran unsuccessfully for the Phoenix City Council in 1992. In 1994 he worked on the unsuccessful campaign for governor of Eddie Basha Jr. He was first elected to the House in November 1996,representing District 22,and was re-elected to that same district in 1998 and 2000. After redistricting in 2002,he ran unopposed for re-election in District 13,along with fellow Democrat Steve Gallardo.
