The Whitechapel Gallery is a public art gallery in Whitechapel on the north side of Whitechapel High Street, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The original building, designed by Charles Harrison Townsend, opened in 1901 as one of the first publicly funded galleries for temporary exhibitions in London. The building is a notable example of the British Modern Style. In 2009 the gallery approximately doubled in size by incorporating the adjacent former Passmore Edwards library building. Mark Peter Andrew Rohtmaa-Jackson is an American British curator based in the United Kingdom. He is the curator, and co-founder, of IMT Gallery in London and a senior lecturer in critical theory and curatorial practices at Northumbria University.
David Thorp is an independent curator and director. He curated GSK Contemporary at the Royal Academy of Arts and Wide Open Spaces at PS1 MoMA New York, among many others. Eddie Peake is a British artist. His varied artistic vocabulary encompasses performance, video, photography, painting, sculpture and installation. Peake's main focus lies in the lapses and voids inherent in the process of translating between verbal language and nonverbal modes of communication. It is in the discrepancy between words and any other language, say, images, emotions, bodily movements or sounds, that his art is located. Peake's work is an often-energetic spectacle in which the absurd and the erotic each find a place, and in which the artist plays a central role.
