David Kim (born 24 May 1963) [1] is a violinist born in Carbondale, Illinois [2] and was the only American to win a prize at the 1986 International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, where he got sixth prize. [3]

In 1987, he was a soloist with the Naumburg Orchestral Concerts, in the Naumburg Bandshell, Central Park, in the summer series. [4]

Since 1999, he has been the concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra. [5] He has played with the All-Star Orchestra [5] and performed with orchestras in Dallas, Pittsburgh, Sacramento, Korea, and Moscow. [6]

Kim resides in a Philadelphia suburb with his wife and two daughters. [2] He also serves on the advisory board of the San Jose Youth Symphony. [7]

The instrument Kim uses is a c. 1757 J.B. Guadagnini made in Milan, Italy. [5] It is on loan from the Philadelphia Orchestra. [5]

Career

Kim's studies of violin started at three. [5] He started studying with Dorothy DeLay at eight. [5] Kim studied at the Juilliard School and received his bachelor's and master's degrees. [5] He has been playing as concertmaster with the Philadelphia Orchestra since 1999. [5] He is also a soloist in The Philadelphia Orchestra as well as many other orchestras in the world.
