David Merriman (born 4 September 1975) is a musician and filmmaker from Dublin, Ireland. He is known for Re-Creation (2024) and The State of Being Human (2015.) [1] [2] [3]

Music business

David Merriman was born in Dublin on the 4th of September 1975.[ citation needed ] and raised in a council estate in Killinarden, Tallaght. He attended singing lessons in the 90s with Uncle, Frank Merriman and studied alongside Sinead O’Connor and Christy Dignam. After forming a band, Exit, David signed to Sony in LA in the late ’90s, working with John Kalodner and producer Kevin Shirley.

Film

After a decade and a half in the music business, David turned his focus on film. In 2015 he wrote and directed his first feature ‘The State of Being Human.’ The film was critically acclaimed and went on to win the viewers’ choice at the Shout/Sidewalk Film Festival .

David has worked with Aslan, Gilbert O’Sullivan, The Pillow Queens, Tulo Mckay and Panti.

While making the concert film Rock Against Homelessness, David met and befriended legendary Irish film maker Jim Sheridan and the two began collaborating. Together they wrote and directed the feature ‘Re-Creation’ starring Vicky Krieps. Sheridan and Merriman continued their collaboration by writing the feature Kerry Babies (2025.) The film is based on the real-life events of Kerry woman Joanne Hayes who was falsely accused of murder in 1985. [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]

Words Upon the Window Pane is a 1994 Irish drama film directed by Mary McGuckian and starring Geraldine Chaplin, Ian Richardson, and Jim Sheridan. McGuckian directorial debut, it is based on William Butler Yeats' one-act play of the same name. Pat O'Connor was billed to direct the project but he personally offered McGuckian, who was writing the screenplay at the time, the opportunity to also direct.
