David Ogden, (born 1966 in Tring in Hertfordshire) is a conductor and composer, directing choirs, choral and church music workshops, courses and festivals in the UK and abroad.

Conducting

Between 1991 and 2002, he was Director of Music at Clifton Cathedral, Bristol, and from 1995 to 2001 he was Regional Director of the Royal School of Church Music for the South West and Midlands.

He conducts Exultate Singers, City of Bristol Choir, Royal Mail Choir, is the Head of the Bristol Choral Centre and Director of Music at Westbury-on-Trym parish church in Bristol. He was conductor of the RSCM Millennium Youth Choir from 2005 to 2014.

For over 25 years he has worked with numerous professional and amateur groups in many fields of music making, including concerts, musical theatre and opera, community projects, primary and secondary level educational workshops, from small children’s groups to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

In June 2015 he conducted a chorus of 130 singers from Bristol Youth Choir and City of Bristol Choir, members of the British Paraorchestra, South West OpenUp Orchestra, Elmfield School for the Deaf & Westbury-on-Trym CofE Academy Signing Buddies, Larkrise Special School and singer Victoria Oruwari in a performance at Bristol's Colston Hall as part of the first BBC Music Day. He has conducted choirs in the UK, the Philippines, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Finland, Italy, Germany, France, Spain, South Korea, Thailand, Belgium, the Netherlands and Ghana.

Television and Radio

David Ogden has conducted choirs on BBC Radios 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and the World Service including several broadcasts of Choral Evensong on BBC Radio 3 with RSCM Millennium Youth Choir, from Gloucester Cathedral in 2014, [2] St Mary Redcliffe Church in Bristol in 2013, [3] Bridlington Priory in 2011, [4] Arundel Cathedral in 2010, [5] Dunblane Cathedral in 2007, [6] Romsey Abbey in 2006, [7] and Beverley Minster in 2005. [8] He has also conducted several appearances on BBC Radio 4's Sunday Worship including services from Gloucester Cathedral in 2014, [9] St Peter de Merton Church in Bedford in 2012 [10]

He has worked as conductor, arranger and music adviser on many editions of BBC TV's Songs of Praise, including a live television broadcast co-ordinating simultaneous performances in Ghana and the UK in 2001.

He was Religious Music Adviser for series 1 to 5 of the BBC's drama series, Call the Midwife. [11]

David Ogden worked with the Royal Mail Choir in the BBC Two series The Choir: Sing While You Work. David conducted the choir for a charity single with X-Factor winner Joe McElderry in 2013 and on the 2013 Royal Mail Christmas TV advertisement. In 2014 the choir raised over £50,000 for Prostate Cancer UK. [12]

On 5 June 2015 he conducted a chorus of 130 singers from Bristol Youth Choir and City of Bristol Choir, members of the British Paraorchestra, South West OpenUp Orchestra, Elmfield School for the Deaf & Westbury-on-Trym CofE Academy Signing Buddies, Larkrise Special School and singer Victoria Oruwari in a performance at Bristol's Colston Hall as part of the first BBC Music Day. [1] The performance was broadcast on Afternoon on 3 on BBC Radio 3 [13] and simultaneously on BBC local radio stations around the South West, [14] was featured on BBC Points West, [15] and there was a live link up with The One Show on BBC One in which David conducted 'Believe' by Lin Marsh [16]

Composing

David Ogden writes music for churches and schools. Many of his pieces have been performed on radio and television, including his best known pieces: Song of Ruth, White Light Eucharist and the anthem, Christ has no body now but yours.

In April 2008 his piece Love's redeeming work is done was sung by a 250-strong choir in the presence of Pope Benedict XVI and a congregation of 40,000 as part of a Papal Mass in the Washington Nationals Baseball Stadium.

Awards

In 2006 he was appointed Associate of the Royal School of Church Music for his services to church music. In February 2015 the RSCM Council announced that it will award him its highest honour, Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music at ceremony in October 2015. [17]

His music has been recorded by many choirs, including Exultate Singers, City of Bristol Choir and the RSCM Millennium Youth Choir.

Leeds Minster, also known as the Minster and Parish Church of Saint Peter-at-Leeds is the minster church of Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. The Choir of St John's College, Cambridge is part of the English cathedral tradition, having been founded to sing the daily liturgy in the College Chapel, though it is set apart from other English choirs of this tradition by the frequent inclusion of Continental works in its repertoire and its emphasis on polyphonic interpretations. Alongside the Choir of King's College, Cambridge, it is one of the two most famous collegiate choirs in Cambridge, having had over 90 recordings published. The choir consists of fifteen Choral Scholars and twenty Choristers and Probationers, all of whom are members of St John's College, many of whom have proceeded to become distinguished musicians.

The Choir of Leeds Minster is the choir of Leeds Minster, Leeds, England, which became a Minster in September 2012. The choir was founded by vicar, Richard Fawcett probably as early as 1815, and was certainly in existence by 1818. The church's choir - boys and men - was, from its origins, a charge on the church rate; and, in what was then a largely non-conformist town, a none-too-popular one. By the 1830s, the choir's resourcing had been taken over by a list of voluntary subscribers. On arrival as Vicar of Leeds in 1837, Walter Farquhar Hook said he found "the surplices in rags and the books in tatters". Additional to its extensive commitment in the provision of choral services, the choir is known to a wide public through many recitals, recordings and broadcasts and by its regular choir tours - the first tour was held in July 1968 and the 40th anniversary tour, from 22 to 27 July 2008, included singing in Ely Cathedral, King's College, Cambridge, the National Musicians' Church St Sepulchre-without-Newgate in the City of London, All Saints Pastoral Centre London Colney and the Chapel of the Royal Hospital Chelsea.

The Exultate Singers is a choir based in Bristol, UK, made up of 40 adult singers. It has mostly specialised in Christian sacred music.

Richard James Shephard MBE, DL, FRSCM was a British composer, educator, and Director of Development and Chamberlain of York Minster. He was acclaimed as one of the most significant composers of church music of his time.

Bristol Choral Society is a large mixed-voiced choir based in Bristol, England, founded in 1889. As of 2002, it is conducted by Hilary Campbe, it has around 140 auditioned members. The choir stages at least three concerts annually at the Bristol Beacon in Bristol with professional orchestras and soloists, and another annually at Bristol Cathedral in addition to other performances and broadcasts in Bristol and further afield.

A virtual choir, online choir or home choir is a choir whose members do not meet physically but who work together online from separate places. Some choirs just sing for the joy of the shared experience, while others record their parts alone and send their digital recordings, sometimes including video, to be collated into a choral performance. There may be a series of rehearsals which singers can watch online, and their performance recordings may be made while watching a video of the conductor, and in some cases listening to a backing track, to ensure unanimity of timing. The worldwide COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 inspired a large growth in the number of virtual choirs, although the idea was not new.

Kerensa Rosie Joanne Briggs is a British composer, primarily of choral and organ music. In 2022 she was appointed composer-in-residence with the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus in Missouri, USA, for a two-year term.
