Pereira is the capital city of the Colombian department of Risaralda. It's located in the foothills of the Andes in a coffee-producing area of Colombia officially known as the "Coffee Axis". Pereira, alongside the rest of the Coffee Axis, form part of UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the "Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia". It's the most populated city in the Coffee Axis. Pereira is also part of the Central West Metropolitan Area, which has 735.769 residents and is composed of Pereira and the neighboring cities of Dosquebradas and La Virginia. It's considered the most important city in the "Coffee Axis" from a geopolitical and economic standpoint.
Kenneth Pereira is a field hockey midfielder from Canada. He was a member of the Canadian field hockey team at the Summer Olympics in 2000 and 2008. Pereira has also been on several Commonwealth Games and Pan American Games teams, winning two gold medals in the latter competition in 1999 and 2007. In the 1999 Pan American Games gold-medal match against Argentina, the only goal in Canada's win was posted by Pereira.

Hernán Gumy is a former tennis player from Argentina, who turned professional in 1991. The right-hander reached his highest singles ATP-ranking on 31 March 1997, when he became number 194 of the world.
Thiago Machado Vilela Pereira is a retired Brazilian international competition swimmer. One of the greatest swimmers in the history of Brazil, Pereira won the silver medal in the 400-meter individual medley at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, beating the then-current Olympic champion Michael Phelps. He also broke a world record in the short course 200-meter individual medley, and broke several South American and Brazilian records. During his career, he competed with swimming legends Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte.

Jacqueline ("Jackie") Margaret Pereira, OAM is a former field hockey striker from Australia, who competed for her native country in three consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1988. She was a member of the Australian Women's Hockey Team, best known as the Hockeyroos, that won the gold medals at the 1988 and the 1996 Summer Olympics. She was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1998.

East Timor first sent competitors to the Paralympic Games for the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney. The country at that time administered by the United Nations, and its athletes participated as "Individual Paralympic Athletes". There were only two: Alcino Pereira in track & field, in the men's 5,000m race ; and Mateus Lukas in men's powerlifting, in the up to 48 kg category. Pereira failed to complete his race, while Lukas lifted 105 kg, finishing 13th and last of the athletes who successfully lifted a weight in his category.
